The British School of Brussels (BSB) is thrilled to invite prospective families to an open morning event showcasing its exceptional Primary programme. On 9 May 2025, parents will have the opportunity to explore the school's innovative approach to education through presentations, guided tours, and interactions with BSB's passionate staff and leadership team. This event is a unique chance for families to witness the school's dedication to inspiring young minds and hear directly from educators who nurture and guide students at every stage of their learning journey.

When selecting a school for your child's formative years, parents often seek more than academic excellence—they look for a welcoming environment that feels like a second home. At BSB, this philosophy drives everything we do. From our youngest learners in Early Years to those embarking on their educational adventure in Lower Primary, BSB offers a safe, inclusive, and stimulating community where every child and their family are cherished.

Building trust and joyful foundations

At BSB, we recognise that early education is about much more than academics—it's about fostering trust, security, and joy. This ethos begins in our Early Childhood Centre for children aged 1 to 3, continues through Lower Primary for ages up to 7, and remains central as students progress through Upper Primary (ages 7–11). These early years are crucial for developmental milestones, and BSB ensures every child flourishes in a caring and positive environment.

Our curriculum is grounded in international research on early childhood development and centres around play-based learning that sparks curiosity. Guided by the "Characteristics of Effective Learning," we encourage children to explore, innovate, take responsibility, and think critically. This approach allows each child to follow their individual developmental path while building confidence and independence.

BSB has carefully designed an enabling environment that inspires creativity and engagement. From free-flow exploration to structured inquiries, children are encouraged to delve into their interests. Our dedicated teachers use storytelling, provocations, and hands-on activities to ignite curiosity and instil a lifelong passion for learning.

Learning beyond the classroom

At BSB, education extends beyond traditional classroom walls. The "Learning without Walls" programme takes learning outdoors, allowing children to connect with nature while enhancing their academic and personal development. Whether exploring The Glade—one of our designated Outdoor Learning spaces—or conducting scientific investigations in the lush Tervuren Forest nearby, outdoor education is integral to our Early Years provision and continues throughout Primary.

These outdoor sessions foster environmental stewardship alongside teamwork, problem-solving skills, and resilience. Esther O'Connor, Team Leader for Primary at BSB, explains: "There is a fundamental need in all of us to be outside... Spending time outdoors enriches children's development both socially and academically."

Holistic education during primary years

For students aged 5–7 in Primary years, BSB builds upon the strong foundations established in Early Years by blending play-based learning with the English National Curriculum. This ensures children are well-prepared for future academic challenges while retaining the joy of discovery. Interdisciplinary "Units of Discovery" encourage connections across subjects like Science, Art, History, and Geography while promoting critical thinking.

Specialist teachers for subjects such as French, Dutch, Music, PE, and Outdoor Learning add variety while providing expert instruction. This comprehensive approach ensures every child develops academically, socially, and emotionally.

Cultivating global citizenship

Even at the earliest stages of education, BSB instils an understanding of each student's worth and place in the world. Children from Year 1 through Year 6 benefit from bilingual classes taught by English and French specialists. This approach nurtures linguistic skills through playful collaboration in mixed-ability groups using interactive teaching methods.

"Our curriculum meets the requirements of the English National Curriculum but is unique to BSB," says Debra Kidd, Primary Leader of Learning and Teaching. "We worked for three years through the pandemic and beyond to create something that was true to our values as a school."

Kidd adds: "In every year group in primary school, our children are asked to create an exhibition to share with parents and undertake an ethical action as part of our mission to be a ‘force for good."

A community-centred approach

At BSB, parents are considered vital partners in their child's educational journey. Programs such as "Curriculum Experience" mornings allow families to engage directly with their child's learning experiences. An open-door policy fosters strong relationships between home and school through informal chats during pick-up times or events organised by the Families of BSB parents association.

With over 70 nationalities represented at BSB, inclusivity is woven into the school's fabric. Families relocating temporarily or permanently find tailored support services that ease transitions into Belgian life. Parents often describe BSB as "a home away from home," where strong relationships between staff, students, and families create an unparalleled sense of belonging.

Choosing a school is one of the most significant decisions you'll make as a parent. At The British School of Brussels, we offer more than just education—we provide a nurturing community where your child will feel safe, valued, and inspired every day.

For families seeking an exceptional start to their child's educational journey or relocating to Belgium, BSB delivers an unparalleled experience—a place where your child will not only learn but truly thrive.
