Despite being a small island in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is a member of several regional and international organizations. Below is some key information.

Indian Ocean Commission (IOC)

Founded in 1984, the Indian Ocean Commission, an intergovernmental organization of the islands in the southeastern Indian Ocean, brings together five member states: Comoros, France (Reunion), Madagascar, Mauritius, and Seychelles. Its role is to defend the interests of the member islands and their economic, social, geographical, and biological specificities.

The actions of the IOC include the following:

  • Political and diplomatic cooperation aimed at supporting regional stability and good political and strategic governance among member countries;
  • Economic and commercial cooperation aimed at integrating island economies into the regional and global economy;
  • Sustainable regional development for the preservation of terrestrial and marine natural resources;
  • Protection of people and improvement of their quality of life;
  • Strengthening regional identity and bringing peoples closer together through increased cultural exchanges and networking of professionals and associations.
