Moving to Singapore has been fun since you've been exploring a new country and culture. However, if you haven't moved with a partner or have broken up and are now single, then you might be interested in striking up some romance.

What's interesting about Singaporean culture is that while the majority of the population is Asian, the culture is a mix of Western and Eastern ideals. So here's what you need to know to attract potential partners.

Have an established career in Singapore

Many Asian cultures measure success by your career, and Singaporeans are no different. When dating, people are looking to see that you have a job. If you're established and can support yourself, then that means you can support a partner, too, and that's what people want.

So, if you're currently unemployed, then it's recommended that you sort out your career first before trying to date. Otherwise, you won't have much luck.

Join Singaporean dating sites and apps

Nowadays, most people meet through dating sites and apps. This makes it one of the easiest ways to meet a huge pool of potential love interests.

Make sure that when you fill out your dating profiles, you're honest. Don't try to over-exaggerate about your qualities and job. Do make sure to list your hobbies, as you never know if someone out there has similar interests. Pick flattering photos, then try your luck when people DM you!

Some good sites and apps to try include Hinge, OkCupid, Tinder, Bumble, and Grindr (for the LGBTQ community).

Beware of fake accounts

It's common for people to make fake accounts and "catfish" people. If possible, you should ask to speak on the phone and video chat to ensure your date is who they say they are. You should also meet them in a public place, even though Singapore's a very safe nation. At least in a public space, you'll be able to get out of the situation quickly if needed.

Always be upfront

Singaporeans have a reputation for being straightforward. You might've been caught off-guard when speaking with people, as they'll discuss things that are usually taboo, such as salaries, religion, and politics. So when you're on dates, you can also be upfront and honest; just take the lead from your date.

While many Singaporeans date seriously and are looking to settle down, others are fine with casual dating. So, make sure you're both on the same page from the start to avoid heartbreak.

What's interesting to note is that around 20% of Singaporeans think you should wait until marriage to have sex, while on the other end of the spectrum, 11% think it's ok to be intimate just after a week or two of dating. 22% believe two years is the ideal time period for waiting until getting married; 17% said 3 years is ideal, while 15% said one year is enough.

Other things to know

Singapore is pretty diverse and is a melting pot of people, mostly from China, India, and Malaysia. Not only do they have different cultures but also religions, such as Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam. Most younger Singaporeans are atheists, but it's always good to find out the religion of the people you're dating. That way, you can be mindful and respectful on your dates.

Most younger Singaporeans also have more progressive views, although there are still some traditional gender roles at play. For example, if you're a man, expect to pay for the first date. However, many women will insist on paying or splitting the costs at least.
