Like any modern city, Stockholm has several food markets: some old and iconic, some new and hip, but all equally exciting and appetising.

Located in one of Stockholm's most exclusive neighbourhoods, the Saluhall is an iconic Stockholm landmark with a history that dates back to the late 1880s. This is the place to be if you want to try typical Swedish cuisine, including cured meats, cheese, seafood, and chocolate. The permanent stalls are run mainly by family businesses that have been around since the hall was started.

Although the outside of this hall is less appealing, the inside is crammed with fresh, local produce as well as a selection of bars and restaurants that offer Swedish and international cuisine.

Budget eats in Stockholm

Despite Stockholm's high living costs and impressive collection of high-end dining places, it's not impossible to find a good deal. Checking out the food halls listed above is a good place to start; open-faced sandwiches, small bites, and drinks to-go are usually affordable in Stockholm's food markets.

The city's hot dog stands or 'korvkiosks' are great for a tasty treat when you are walking around. Many of the hot dogs are served in less traditional ways with a side of mashed potatoes, different types of bread, and typically Swedish toppings like pickled herring.

Kebab restaurants and Asian cuisine restaurants have good offers for buffets and shared plates, while ready-made convenience meals at a decent price (and very decent quality) can be purchased at most and chains located throughout Stockholm. Keep an eye out for good breakfast or lunch specials as you get familiar with the city.
