Adelaide is smaller than most cities but very livable. Traffic is easy to navigate and you can drive from one end of the city to the other in 40 minutes. Traffic at peak hours adds 20 minutes to the journey. The City is packed with more cafes and restaurants than you could possibly visit, has very moderate weather and even housing is fairly affordable.
Adelaide can be clicky, and there exists an undercurrent of racism here. People who demonstrate an accent in their speech may find it hard to gain employment in any capacity. As an Australian this saddens me. Adelaide people usually grow up and stay here, so their circles of friends are usually intact from their school years. However there are many places to make new friends, many communities to fit into from all cultures and it can be a city of opportunity. It can also be a dangerous city. Never take Australia for granted as we rate fairly high on the personal crime statistics. Cab drivers for instance are assaulted regularly. I have never met a cab driver who is brave enough to work nights and has not been assaulted. The far northern suburbs are considered low socio economic and are a no go zone for taxi drivers. Adelaide City can be treacherous at night so avoid it after midnight if you can, or travel with friends. Try not to be out on the street intoxicated. Hindley street is a place you want to avoid late at night - early morning. Saying this, there are much safer places to be. All Australian cities have their HOT spots.
