Capital Program Relighting Works ? Replace Existing T12 Lighting The aim of this program is to replace the old fluorescent T12 fitting with new led luminaires for more than 15 schools within the Hampshire County arrears on a £500,000 budget. The re-lighting works involving the replacement of existing lighting in classrooms and communal areas (hall, etc?). This work will also involve the re-wiring of the lighting circuit from the local distribution board location as identified on the design drawings and also the removal of asbestos works identified within the asbestos reports. For examples, at Talavera Junior School. During this project, I had to do the following: ? Provide new LED lighting which is more environmental friendly and help improve the energy usage, reduce the carbon footprint in the building. To do this, I had to ? Attend site visit to carry out site survey and identify the client requirement by speaking with the client being the school in this case and to identify the area of works. E.g. classroom, corridors, staff offices and halls. I also had to identify the electrical services within the building e.g. local distribution boards, local fire alarm panel and type, existing fittings type and range, number of existing fittings and cable routes. ? I then came back to the office and request asbestos report within the proposed area of works which is agreed by the client or school. After that, I will pass my survey notes to Hampshire Scientific Services which is a department within the Hampshire County Council who deal with asbestos containing materials. This department will then arrange another site visit and appoint an asbestos surveyor to carry out the asbestos survey and prepare with writing the report of their finding. This usually takes approximately 20 working days. ? If there?s asbestos containing materials within the area of works then I have to make sure that this is highlighted and added to the drawing and electrical specification so that the main electrical contractor will be able to appoint an asbestos specialist to deal with the asbestos issue prior to the new installation. ? After reviewing the asbestos report, I quickly do a feasibility study/report to check if the allocated founding will be able to meet the requirement of the project. I then start my design using the following computer software?s: Relux to carry out lighting calculations e.g. identifying lighting manufacturer, choose light fittings which is suitable for the project. Speak to the manufacturer to find out price per fitting or obtain a quote. AutoCad to assist me with drawings and Heavercomb to calculate capacity of each circuits ? After the design is completed, I sat down with a senior electrical engineer to review the project which helps eliminate early issues which may arise during the tendering process. Oakland?s RC Secondary School ? Toilet Refurbishment The works comprise the reconfiguration of the existing toilets in Oaklands Secondary School which involve the following: ? Provide new LED lighting including emergency lighting and controls e.g. PIRs ? New wiring and containment ? Small power ? Provide new hand dryer ? Supplies to mechanical services e.g. extract fans ? New smoke detector as shown on drawing ? Earthing ? Testing and commissioning ? Certification Provide detailed operating, maintenance instructions, record information and building log book and to carry out the works in accordance with BS7671 including all amendments, Hampshire County Council Standard Electrical Specification. This project was allocated a budget of £130000 for the electrical, mechanical and building works including engineer?s fees. During this project, I had to attend few site visits with a building surveyor, a mechanical engineer, structure engineer, asbestos surveyor, builder and the school site manager and school head teacher. We walked through the proposed area of works and agreed on timescale delivery the project. This meeting also gives all the project personnel?s the opportunity to work together and get to ask technical questions about the project e.g. how many power the mechanical engineer needs for the mechanical services, location of extract fans, position of hand dryers, stripping out and relocating existing electrical services etc? This meeting was minutes at the time and I was leading the meeting, so I had to write minutes and issue to all engineers involved. Everyone knew their actions. I also had to organise and lead pre-start meetings and record every information that was agreed with the contractor, sub-contractor and the client for example; I had to agree to a program of work and a deadline with the client/school and the contractor for the removal of the asbestos work and the installation of the new electrical services. This was agreed to be carried out during the school half-term to minimise disruption on site. During this meeting, we also agreed that the main contractor should monitor the sub-contractor on site e.g. by signing in and out each day for the duration of the entire project. This project was very challenging because, there was many specialist and contractor involved so we all had to work as part of a team to help us facilitate the delivery of the project. Communication was also very important during all stages of this project. I was sending out emails and attend site surveys, calling manufacturer to obtain the right information and share my finding with the team. If programs have been agreed by the client then during the electrical installation phage, I organise site inspection to carry out health and safety check. During this visit, I have to sign in and sign out after the visit, wear PPE and display my name badge also. I have a CSCS card which I present to the site manager during the visit. These site visits identify early mistakes that maybe caused by the main contractor, electrical contractor or designer, this visit helps to minimise the risk of additional costs or delay to the project. For example, they were asbestos present in the ceiling during the installation and this was identified when I attended site and I had to stop the job, called an Asbestos removal specialist for the removal of the asbestos works. Rowner Junior School ? Office alterations This project involved the reconfiguration of the office and to create meeting rooms for staff within the school. The work comprise of the following: Stripping out existing electrical services and provide new as recommended by the school, provide new led lighting, smoke detector, data and small power. All the wiring/installation of the new electrical services to comply with the following regulations: ? BS7671 17TH Edition requirements for electrical installation ? The SLL Code for Lighting ? BS5839 Fire Alarm devices ? BS5266 Emergency lighting ? BS6701 Telecommunications equipment and cabling specification ? Part C of Hampshire County Council Electrical and Mechanical Standard Specification which can be found
