In 2010, after being laid off from my job as the publisher and editorial director of a national healthcare technology magazine, I decided to travel internationally. My goal was not to become a tourist, staying at hotels and eating at restaurants, but rather to try to live as frugally as possible, as immersed in a country's cultrue as possible, for several months at a time. Since my layoff, I have lived in Costa Rica for 14 months, in Criatia for theee months, and now am living in Catania, Sicily, for three months.
