Introduction

I am planning to retire next year and am trying to find a cheap but cosmopolitan city to live in or near. Montevideo, Uruguay seems much like SF - cosmopolitan and laid back. I live in a beautiful old house now and would like to find an apt. in an older but well maintained building but all I see on the internet are small modern and expensive. I will take a Spanish intensive before I come, probably in Mexico which is not so far away. Someone on the blog said that the Spanish is different in Montevideo but expensive to learn. I will probably continue to have a tutor once I get there. Bottom line, I may have to settle on Mexico to live because I am on a pension. Hope not I don't want to live in an expat community.Don't suppose there will be any chance to do therapy in English there? I'd like to volunteer.I do experiential work and did it in Japan with a translator. Worked fine. I also sing in a choir here and hope to join a church (I'm Catholic) that has one. Writing a therapy book too. I am originally from New Orleans and was happy to see there is a French school there and a Jazz Festival! Love Jazz! .. this seems to be stream of consciousness so I'll sign off now. Hope to get to know you guys who have already made it out!!..Oh, also, I'm a screaming liberal and SF is a haven in a sea of fascist idiots.

I joined expat.com on 10 June 2011.
