Hi I'm Alex, 52 years young. I am born and raised in NYC and yearning for a change. I am about 3 years away from being able to take a partial pension from my government job with 18 years of service. The partial pension won't be enough to live on in the US, so I'm researching where I could potentially retire abroad. One of the places that has caught my attention is the Algarve region of Portugal as it's been mentioned in several articles I've read as a great choice for American expats. I plan on making a visit this year 2019 so I can check it out. I expect to be collecting about 2K in the partial pension and from what I read this could be enough for one person to live comfortably in the Algarve. I would still be open to working in the area, I have a Masters Degree in Education (teaching English as a Second Language) and I also have NYC bartending experience! I'd love to connect with anyone one this forum who is partially retired in the Algarve region to hear about your experiences and what I need to know to make this happen (logistics, taxes, legalities, etc.) Glad to be here!
