I'm a 30-something, fledgling expat, who's just left the North of England to travel to India and start a new life in Chennai with my fiancé, Phil. Back home we lived in a little white cottage in a quiet town on the edge of the Peak District hills, with our big, fluffy cat Barney for company. I sang in the Halle Choir in Manchester and worked in the city centre as a Marketing & Communications Manager for an environmental NGO. Phil, meanwhile, spent the last three years working in an 18th-century manor house in the Lincolnshire countryside, teaching American undergraduates about British History and Music. When his contract there ended in May he took up a new job as Music Lecturer at a music conservatory in Chennai, India. And here we are, just arrived in the heat and chaos of the city centre and learning how to live as expats.
I joined expat.com on 16 June 2012.
