Post new topic

Mickael

Hello everyone,

As every year, we invite you to share your experience on the evolution of the cost of living in the region or city where you live in order to answer future requests for information from new members of the site who would like to move there soon in Dominican Republic.

In terms of accommodation, how much does it cost to rent/buy a flat or house in in Dominican Republic?
How much do you pay on average for public transport (bus, metro, train, tram, taxi)?
What is the average price of your monthly food basket?

How much does health insurance cost? How much does it cost to see a doctor in Dominican Republic?

What about school fees for your children?

What is the average monthly cost of electricity, gas, water, internet, telephone?

What is the average cost of your leisure activities?

If there are other expenses that you think are useful, please share them!

Thank you in advance for your future contribution

Let me address this by saying we are the same as most other countries. The pandemic and supply issues have had a real impact on us. Inflation is real.

A recent article in Dominican Today stated inflation effects the poor 100% of the time.  When you consider. 75% of our population is either poor or working poor this is a huge impact!

I think everything is more expensive.

Rents are up everywhere. Real estate prices were up, not sure they will settle.

Resorts are much more expensive. Flights are up.

All fuels jumped last year but then we're subsidized by the government to soften the blow. That will change I expect this year!

Insurance costs are rising.  Doctors and clinics are feeling the pinch of inflation and they are fighting insurance companies and government for more money. That always translates into higher premiums.

Electricity rates went up as scheduled,. Until the government stepped in and paused the increases. That will change.

Uber increased,. Taxis increased. Our subway in Santo Domingo did not increase, but it likely will.

Internet etc is competitive so the rates have not jumped much.

Food has increased! The amount depends how you eat. Imported items increased more!

Simply put it costs more to live here! Almost everything has or will go up!

Hi there.

DR is one of the most expensive countries I've ever been to. But I'm not surprised since it's an island.

I come from São Paulo, Brazil, which is quite expensive too so I'll be comparing to that.

Rent: Less expensive than I thought it would be. You can pay 700, 800 USD in Gazcue or similar in a 1 bedroom apt.

Electricit: Quite expensive. Need to watch out the AC usage. from 2500 to 4500 pesos. I've seem people that use the AC full on paying 16000 pesos.

Supermarket: VERY expensive, specially chocolate, beer, meat. Almost everything can cost 30, 50% more than other countries. PLUS, you have to watchout for ITBIS, their IVA, which can surprise you on the checkout. Even the local products are quite expensive imo.

Internet: very expensive!!! 2000, 2500 pesos for 20mb. Higher speeds like 200mb, 300mb can cost around 3500, 4000 dop.

Fuel: Ok, 2500, 3000 pesos for a full 50L tank.

Pet supplies: If you have a pet, prepare to pay very high prices. Everything is double or triple than in other places.

Services in general are cheap, but products, wow.

Restaurants: quite expensive too. If you go to a good restaurant, not high end, it's quite common to expend 70, 100 usd for a couple if you take the appetizers, main course and dessert.

@Joao Zaccardi those prices are about 1/3 of the cost of what I pay living in Canada so to me that is extremely cheap which is why I’m moving the the DR!!!

JohnZ1

@devaneely Wow, Canada seems quite expensive now haha.

Everything is relative to our own experiences!  That's why facts matter!

Everything also depends on our chosen style of living!

JohnZ1

@planner So true! For us Brazilians and our Argentinean friends, Cars are cheap here, but for people coming from Chile, US or Colombia it's much more expensive, so yeah, comparison.

I pay quite expensive rent here, but because I was used to in São Paulo, but here with the same value I live in an apt 3x bigger.

devaneely

@Joao Zaccardi my rent for a small 2-bdrm is $1800 plus utilities!  It just cost me $1.50 to buy 2 limes whereas when I was in the DR, I paid $1.20 for a dozen limes!

@Joao Zaccardi

yes it’s quite expensive, you can’t get one bedroom for $700-800,you’ll pay between 2-3k CAD.

Make your math.Stop complaining.

JohnZ1

@renikg I'm not complaining, I'm just sharing. Not very nice of you.

@Joao Zaccardi

Thank you for providing and when I was in Croatia I noticed food was very cheap compared to DR and other areas.

My big issue with DR costs is the ITBIS.
