Any advice for a new volunteer?

Post new topic

I'm interested in volunteering in Kenya, probably around the Niarobi area within teaching, construction, or agriculture.

I've found a few good sites with listings and various information but I'm interested in feedback from experienced volunteers on the ground.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

@ZachtheLad so you want to volunteer for people driving 10M ksh vehicles, paid to help kids in the street or what ever, 200k/year?

Good luck with that

Volunteering is illegal in Kenya unless you have a work permit of sorts, or a 'Special Pass' (you would need support from the sponsoring organisation to obtain one for 3 months).

Unpaid work counts as work and is often seen as depriving a Kenyan of a job.  The other aspect which is often criticised is that volunteers show up, work for a few weeks, then disappear, so there is no continuity and local communities are left hanging.

I wouldn't recommend volunteering unofficially and 'under the radar'.

@Longonot62 Hi Longonot62! Wondering if you have any insight into volunteering (unpaid) under a Type K Permit? Would the government see that differently?

You might be able to do it with a special permit.

Hi, Work is prohibited with a Class K Permit and thew government definition of 'work' covers both paid and unpaid.  So if you do decide to do some unpaid work, keep it very quiet!

@Longonot62 Get caught and you will get kicked out.  Why not try to do the right thing for the right reasons?

Longonot62

I am in no way condoning breaking the law here, but people will.  Yes if you are caught, arrest and deportation is the usual result - Kenya has a low tolerance for illegal workers, or indeed visa overstayers.

Exactly.  Hopefully we will be able to contribute to our new Country.  🙏
