Dog lovers

Post new topic

Just for interest's sake, I shudder to see how dogs are treated here in our province which I think it's pretty much across the Philippines. Keeping dogs in cages outside in the heat and rain just for the sake of having a dog is so cruel. We have a Rottweiler and a Maltese, the greatest of buddies and they live with us in the house no cage at all. It has raised some eyebrows from local residents especially when we take them for a walk in our subdivision.

Loving animals it's difficult for us to turn a blind eye to the treatment of dogs by people and they still say they love dogs.

Anyone have the same experience? or just me?

Agree 100% with what you say but honestly? That is what you see wandering and driving around but there are plenty of Filipinos that look after their pets usually behind high fences unseen. We are at a point now after being here 5 years to buy a couple of Labradors, the property is pretty secure as well as CCTV as I know Labs will lick an intruder to death but that's the breed we have chosen. The previous owner had a Rotti and all the locals hated it and the owner never looked after it, sad.

Steve you might be right, we went to new friends we made through horse riding and the father was the previous mayor and they have 11 Rottweilers all in small cages I really had to bite myself to contain any comment as they are really good people and good friends. I hope that things will change, here with us they see how we treat our dogs and how the Rotti is trained it gives them a different perspective and hope for me as an animal lover.

Dogs should be treated as family members and not chained nor locked in cages. They are companions and should be treated with respect as they respect in return, I see in Bens Barangay they get a puppy and play and torment it for 6 months and then lose interest, the dog turns savage and ends up on a chain and what should be a 10/12 year life for a loved pet ends up with mange and a 4 to 6 year life. Very very sad and then some. when the dog passes they get another puppy and the cycle repeats.

We have no say, how most here treat their pets that they loved when cuddly.

As for the Rotti's perhaps they are let out at night for protection being the ex Mayor?

Cheers, Steve.

Steve you are spot on I see my dogs as my boys as i have a girl and yes, they are family wherever my nearly 3-year-old goes the Rotti is there and not aggressive at all but possessive on her and my wife as we are his family too,

For the mayor i doubt being let out at night but let us hope and pray for that as Rotti's are not cage dogs, they are working dogs and needs lots of exercise.

I just love them as they are so good with family and protection of their own territory.

Anyway, wish you so much joy with the Labs you intend to get, yes they will lick but still such great dogs, enjoy.

I have a well trained Belgian Malinois I brought in-cabin with me on the plane when I (we) moved here.  My honey already had 4 mutts. None are trained but they somewhat obey her. The scraggly effed up doggies outside our now walled and fenced property are malnourished (she still leaves a little outside the gate at night), fight for survival dogs. Even though somebody owns them. Every couple months there's new puppies running around from who knows? It's sad. There is 1 dog owner, our neighbor, that has a dog they take care of. Except when it came to keeping it locked up away from others when in heat. And God knows province folks won't pay for spay and neuter. Hell they won't even take the time to do it free when a facility offers it.

Which reminds me, it's getting time for annual shots for mine. I'll make an appointment with a good vet in the City and drive the three hours each way for that.

Yep, either neglected or pampered. Seen both. Also mutts roaming around. Dogs are supposed to be protected under law:

The Animal Welfare Act of 1998 is the primary law in the Philippines that governs the treatment of animals. It is illegal to torture any animal, neglect to provide adequate care, sustenance or shelter, maltreat any animal, or subject any dog or horse to dogfights or horse fights.

Laws aren't enforced in Philippines, unless money is to be made.

Poverty sucks I guess. I avoid people who mistreat them ie dont make friends with them. My subdivision has both those that walk their dogs and those that cage them. It is crazy to me this lack of  respect to fellow mammals! Of course, in the US it is done behind factory walls...
