ONT Router (modem) problem.

Post new topic

Hi,

Hoping someone can answer some internet/wi fi questions for me. I use Vivacom as my service provider here in Plovdiv. They supply their customers with Nokia routers, and the older ones are pretty average to say the least. Mine is about to give up the ghost, and I'm wondering if there is anyone out there who has the same service but uses their own fibre optic modem.

Is it possible to go out, buy a new ONT router and just plug your fibre optic cable in and away you go ??

Any help or answers would be appreciated.

Cheers.

If their router gives up the ghost, they should replace it! My understanding is that their fibre packages now include a decent gigabit router, so perhaps they'll upgrade you, if you ask nicely. :-)

My house fibre guy (local provider, not Vivacom) installed a pretty basic router, so I connected my own gigabit router to it (with a standard cable). It works well.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, of course they will replace it ...... but we had a bad experience with Vivacom last time the 'engineers' came around to the apartment I thought I would go this route first.

So, in your instance ..... you are still using what your guy installed .... and you plugged your router into that .... did I understand that correctly ?

We have no complaints on the wifi provided ....... fast and consistent.

Yup, exactly! He installed his standard (cheap) router which includes the ONT. I thought it wasn't very good, so I connected it to my gigabit router with a standard CAT 5 cable. But I suppose I should try with a Cat 5e or Cat 6 to see if that makes any difference (I just assumed that his fibre wasn't superfast, or at least not for 20 leva).

Understood ..... yes it may make a difference.

Thanks for the prompt reply.
