Scotland for 3-4 months on educational sabbatical

Post new topic

Hello!

I was awarded a term sabbatical for this Spring, 2024. I am a college professor in need of some time to re-energize my passion of teaching.  My plan is to live in Edinburgh although I am open to other locations.  Looking to arrive mid-April until early August.

Goals for my sabbatical are to spend time in active communities and learn about the  relationship between mental health awareness and physical activity.  I have a strong background in sport psychology, running, crossfit and rugby.

Rentals in Edinburgh are very expensive! Any tips on the best way to secure housing would be so helpful.

I am new to this site and haven't searched the Scotland forum yet. I am sure there are some great resources there.

Hoping to make connections for my travels.

Thank you,

Jenny Cruickshank

Hello and welcome on board !

Till members provide you their feedback, I would suggest that you read the articles of the Living in Scotland guide for expats. Hopefully,  you will find useful information under the accommodation section.

All the best

Hello and thank you for your reply.  I did learn about Zoopla for housing and have found many options.  I am working on learning more about neighborhoods near the university, etc.  Public transport is so accessible which I am looking forward too.

Thank you!

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

To add to what Bhavna has offered.  Scotland is a beautiful place.  If you're already looking at the likes of Zoopla, then I can't offer you anything better except to say that for the short time you're going to be in the country, perhaps AirBnb is an option worth considering because they are aimed at the short-term resident.  Landlords of rental properties tend to favour long-term residents; if there was a glut of rental accommodation you may find someone willing to do it, but this is not the case currently, where the opposite is true.  The other option is to ask around the University itself, perhaps they have options you can take up.

Considering your goals, most people in Scotland live across what they describe as the Central Belt; look at a map, you have Glasgow on the left, and Edinburgh on the right, draw a line between the 2 and extend it out to the coastlines, that's the Central Belt.  Public transport along the belt is quite good and you'll find accommodation is cheaper the further away you are from the 2 cities.  We stay at Haddington when we go up there, but our trips are the short weekend types and we use the cheaper travel hotels.

One last point, you say you plan to stay until August, if you can stay until the end of the month, you can experience the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Military Tattoo, both excellent events.

I hope this helps.
