Best Place to Live for Dating

Hi,
I have a pretty long list of cities that I'm considering moving to. Most are capital cities. I've been to several of them on vacation, but not all.
Does it matter much where you live in terms of dating as a man? I'm looking to ideally find something long term.
One thing that I've heard a number of times is that the people in the north are much friendlier. Does that translate to dating as well? My guess is that it means that the north would be better.
There are a number of drawbacks to the north though. For me in particular, I don't want to live somewhere that's hot all the time. If it was not for that, I think I could deal with the other issues like the higher crime rate.
@lalajaja Well to help your search a little. I am now a Permanent Resident of Brazil, living in a small village a few hours from Fortaleza. it is a balmy 84 degrees year-round. As far as dating. My Brazilian 2nd mother is from Niteroi across the water from Rio de Janeiro and I spent my youth going to Copacabana Beach, clubs and hanging out with the fellows at an Outdoor Cafe on Avenue de America that was very popular with Expats. They all wanted to meet that Brazilian Girl. In the end I met my Brazilian wife at a church in Maryland in the USA and we have been married for 24 years. What was meant to be will be and I don't think your planning will help that much. The Northeastern area is nice, but you will not find a girlfriend on a map,

@roddiesho Thanks for your response.
j agree that there's a significant element of pure luck, but I thought that maybe women in the south/north may be different from one another in some general approximate sense. Nothing can be said of all women (or people) in a given region of course, but there are often cultural differences which can be quantified.
How's your Portuguese ? Are you fluent ? The best chances of meeting people if you cannot communicate in Portuguese are in Rio and Sao Paulo, where the best, albeit limited chances, of meeting someone who speaks English are to be found.
Having said that, and having been traveling and living in Brasil for over 20 years is that the only people who speak English are prostitutes, thieves and the one guy your hotel hired.....kkkkkkkkkk.
IMHO there is no difference that I can perceive between Brasilians from the south or north except for the accents. They're all nice people.
@Gasparzinho 777 Thanks, that's helpful information.
I'm working on my Portuguese now. My hope is to be at least conversant before I arrive, with fluency to follow eventually. I'm very aware that I will need learn it to live there long term.
07/14/24 @lalajaja. First, I agree with Gasparzinho777 that the better your Portuguese is, the better luck you'll have. So it's good that you're working on it.
If you are currently using any apps to meet men, make sure that at least some of them also have operations in Brazil, and that you note in your profile that you're planning to move to Brazil in the near future. Men will start finding YOU, and you'll get some idea from the responses of where men who might interest you tend to congregate.
I have a strong preference for the North and the Northeast, and with a few exceptions, I think that the stories of crime being worse than in the Southeast are overdrawn. You're right not to pay too much attention. As @roddiesho writes, between 85 and 95 all year 'round is pretty common, or as I like to say, twelve Julys a year, and July was always my favorite month. The cities that are regularly hotter are easy to identify in their Wikipedia articles.
You'll find that Belo Horizonte has a definite cooler season if twelve Julys is bit much for you, a strong, typically Brazilian culture, a pleasant lifestyle, and a lot of well-educated people. BrasÃlia also has a pleasant climate, education figures are through the roof, and a reasonably good nightlife, although a modernistic governmental center that hasn't had the time to develop many traditions of its own may not appeal to everyone.
@abthree Thank you for that info.
I hear a lot of positive stuff about BH. It's high on my list of places to check out. I think it's often overlooked becuase it doesn't have a beach.
Brasilia seems a bit sterile to me, but I've never been, so it may be lovely.
I'm actually interested in meeting women personally.

LOL -- sorry, I missed the "AS" in "as a man", and thought you were a woman! Same advice, though.
As a American man with a good income, you could end up leaving every bar you go to engaged if you're not careful, so be careful.
@Gasparzinho 777 I agree with your comments on dating geographically, however I will just say that my Brazilian wife of 24 years is bilingual, my 97-year-old mother who lives with us in Northeastern Brazil is also bilingual, so you can probably imagine my response to your comment on the type of Brazilian woman who speaks English in Brazil.

My wife is also bilingual........she's a thief though as my money keeps vanishing.
@Gasparzinho 777 no one in my family are thieves.

Really? As a resident of Salvador I disagree. Statistics also indicate your assessment is incorrect.
@abthree No worries. Although it doesn't apply to me, it's great that Brazil is very progressive in regard to LGBT rights.
Just a friendly reminder that "A Man with experience is never at the mercy of a man with an opinion" I have lived in Northeast Brazil, very comfortably, for a year and a half in a small village of 2,500. It is very peaceful and neighborly. I have witnessed no form of aggression or crime since I have been here. Just to remind all those out there that blanket statements, let alone statistical printouts do not cover everything.

I feel you here....
At the risk of being labeled as "prehistoric" or even "mysogynistic", I think that it's a primary role of one partner to top up the resources bucket. The counterpart tends to draw down in order to balance things up.
This is the ying-yang of life.

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend Salvador either. Yet you choose to live there. Go figure! 😂

Nowhere did I say I don't recommend Salvador. It's a fascinating city full of wonderful Afro-Brazilian culture, history, great beaches, and with a marvelous climate. I am merely correcting your usual dose of misinformation. Yes, it does have a crime problem, as do many cities in the Northeast. I, on the other hand, wouldn't live in Manaus, which I have visited several times, because has few redeeming qualities other than the area that surrounds it. Its murder rate is also only marginally less than that of Salvador. Go figure
Getting back to the topic of "Dating", here is an interesting way to get a date AND make some money at the same time....
Not sure how secure this date is going to be - but aren't all dates inherently unknown events?
           DATING TIPS:
"Now I-m the kind of guy who don't believe
That chivalry is dead, no
Cause I believe a woman should be treated
With the utmost respect, mmm-hmm-
Now I like openin' doors
Pickin' up (Yeah) her hanky (Yeah) off the floor
Treat her like a lady
Light her cigarette if she smokes ( sorry, this is an old song )
Even (Help her with her coat) well
Treat her like a lady
When I was young, my mama used to say, boy
A woman's like a flower, with love on her you shower
Ever since that day, her words never went away
I always will remember to treat my baby tender
You'll find a heart that you've always been lookin' for
How could anybody ask for much more, whoa-ooh-ooh-
Now I like openin' doors
Pickin' up (Yeah) her hanky off the floor
Treat her like a lady

@lalajaja I've traveled to most of the states in Brazil. You also have to factor in the vibe of the city and living conditions. If you're more interested in women to men ratio, then Juiz de Fora in Minas Gerais or Brasilia is your best bet. Juiz de Fora supposedly has a 8-to-1 female to male ratio according to a few Brazilians that I have spoken with.  While visiting Brasilia, I went on a few dates and the women all complained that there were no single men in their city! I personally found that Brasilia was a very nice modern city with a good climate. I haven't been to Juiz de Fora but I have been to Belo Horizonte. Wasn't a big fan of the city.
The city of Curitiba is also worth a look. Clean and modern with plenty of single women, but more of the European looking type since it's in the south. Weather gets a bit cold in the winter months (June - August) though!
As others have already pointed out, language is the key thing. Even in Sao Paulo, not that many people speak fluent English and of course they would rather speak their own native language. Learning and becoming fluent in Portuguese is a must. From there, you should probably check out cities that you find most enjoyable to live in and worry about the dating scene secondary as there are plenty of single Brazilian women in practically every city.
@bangunolufsen Thanks for your response. I'm pretty sure your friends have been pulling your chain in regard to an 8 to 1 ratio in Juiz de Fora. That would be amazing, but nowhere is that unbalanced.
In regard to Brasilia, I'm going to take another look at it. I think it's on the higher cost range, so it would be competing with SP as a pick for me.
@jonesio Is Salvador good from a dating perspective? I think the weather there would be a bit too hot for me unfortunately.
It sounds like most people are saying that location doesn't matter too much.
Do not worry about dating, you’re a rich gringo.

Honestly, I wouldn't know. I've been married to a woman from Salvador for 25 years and we met elsewhere. It is a city of about 4 million (regional area), and full of beautiful, largely friendly people. So I would assume it is good. However, I agree with the opinions of others who recommend you speak Portuguese. Otherwise, how are you really going to know the person (or people) you're dating and why they're interested in you?
I married a baiana that spoke little English. Best five years of my life.

I was just about to voice this opinion myself.
@jonesio Five Star Response if I may.

@alan279 - you know that this statement begs a followup post, right - esp. in a thread related to dating?
A Brazilian friend once said that I know all about women. I told our friends that I have had seven failed marriages (by Brazilian count). 😀
@alan279...and that does not include your jail novella from a couple of weeks ago.
