Moving to Punta Cana with 2 kids from Canada

Post new topic

Kriss1989

We are considering moving to Punta Cana or Sosua. We have 2 kids (5 and 10). I don't think we will have an issue with the residency as we do have a property in Punta Cana and we do have our own business that allow us to WFH (in fact we are 100% remote). We really just need a good internet connection and that's it.

We are not sure yet which area will work best for us, but we don't want to ensure we go to a place with a sense of community that will allow the kids to keep a sense of thr culture they know (American/Candian) as well as practice their Spanish (they both speak Spanish, as my husband and I are fluent, born and raised in Latam).

We want to understand a couple of things:

1. Best schools (private) with the avg price per kid.

2. Best communities

3. Avg monthly cost of living: internet electricity, gas, food, insurance (house, medical, car), water, cell phone plans for 2, eating out (1 or twice a month)

4. Is there anything that you would bring from Canada? Like furniture or appliances?

5. We saw that some of the villas in pre-constriction doesn't have similar finishes to what we are use to, what's the avg cost of a contrator? Lets say to reno a kitchen

6. We also saw thag the brands of appliances like kitchenaid are not common. Is there any where to buy them?

7. Do they offer car leases like in Canada and the US?

We are trying to figure out if we can live with let's say a budget of USD6500 a month or so and the type of lifestyle we can have with that budget

@Kriss1989 Greetings fellow Cdn. Welcome to the forum.  Others with far more info will also reply. As a retired Cdn militaryfrom AB, I spend more time on the North Coast to relax and enjoy the water as I reside inland in Moca with my Dominican wife. I don't know about Private schooling but I do know there's a school in Sosua that, if I recall, is International and has a very good reputation. Others may provide more on that. As far as budget, the amount you indicated will more than suffice. I am quite comfy with my military pension, military medical pension (which is just over $1000USD lower than what you stated) CPP & OAS. The cost of living is lower in Sosua. Many find ways to ensure internet service and someone will/canprovide that info and it appears you may have the capital to invest in such. Car leasing is another question - I've not heard of such here.  There are/is very nice communities in Sosua where many Expats live and have had their homes built so someone from there can provide all that info. I ahve found appliances to be of good value and brand names like Westinghouse are available. Of course, once you have Residency, within 6 six months you can ship, duty free, things from Canada that you wish to bring. Ihave yet to determine really good furniture makers but again, someone with more time and experience here can respond to that for you. Your monthly expenses are dependant upon your lifestyle but you can likely meet all expenses easily with between $1500 to $2000 CDN. Best of luck with your planning and move!!

Welcome to the forums Kriss.  First I will say please confirm you qualify for residency.  Property alone does not qualify unless it is a corporation that generates jobs and income.  In addition your remote income from a business will not qualify you.

You can reach out to Lishali Baez to confirm. +1 (809) 860-1231 is phone and WhatsApp!
