medical insurance query

Post new topic

hello all,

we are moving to Cyprus next month and have prepared all our documents. We are a bit puzzled about the medical insurance part. Do we need to have medical insurance to get registered with the state medical services or be registered with the state medical services to get medical insurance? Or do people simply opt for private medical insurance in Cyprus?

Thanks in advance for any enlightenment!

If you have an S1 because you are state pension age you can register for GESY the Cypriot NHS. It takes forever to obtain

You will need private health insurance if you are obtaining a temp visa and not a EU passport holder. The insurance must provide repatriation. Things are different if you are a EU passport holder.

You cannot join GESY if you don't pay into the system via work. You can join GESY if you are in receipt of state pension and have applied and received your form S1 .. that also works if only one of you is on state pension the other gets it too

Outside of that you need private healthcare cover that includes repatriation cover. And will need it until such time as you are in receipt.of state pension and S1.

It is my understanding that a person cannot make voluntary GESY payments except if that person has worked here and then retires or gives up work early having made GESY contributions whilst working

Also be aware that if you are not eligible to join GESY you could still have to pay 2.65% GESY contribution based on declared worldwide income via taxation through your tax return on online taxisnet portal. Despite having to also pay for private healthcare.
