Son has turned 18, now what?

Post new topic

Hi everybody

My son - born and raised in NL but with DE/UK nationality - still lives at home but has just turned 18. I have questions about what happens now. Obviously, his kinderbijslag will no longer be paid but what happens with regard to health insurance and, potentially, adult support payments?

  1. At the moment, I have elected to keep him on my health insurance policy with CZ. I presume that, as I am in full-time employment, I will simply pay the same for him as I do for myself? If he moves onto his own policy and is not working, would his insurance be free, or reimbursed by the government?
  2. Is he eligible for some sort of social security payments, as he's not earning? If so, would he need to be looking for employment in order to claim them? He's currently training but not in any organisation - just on his own, online, at home.

I'd be very happy for any guidance anybody can give me. I speak fluent Dutch so feel free to reply in Dutch and/or use the actual Dutch terms for things. Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

Interesting one; I'm assuming you mean your son has German/British nationality; what passport does he use?

My immediate thought would be you need to speak to the IND and the UWV regarding your son's status.  With regard to medical insurance, I'd advise you to speak to your current supplier and ask if/how much the costs will go up and how long you can do it.

I Just discussed it with my wife (our kids didn't go through this as we had moved back to the UK by the time this happened), we think that any benefits you get from the state will have a deduction for medical insurance and in order to get anything, you would need proof of looking for work.  If he's going on to further education and not classed as a Dutch resident, then he'd be allowed to work for 16 hours p/week, after which he'd have to rely on the bank of mum & dad.

I hope this has helped.
