hi, i got a job offer as a preschool teacher,i was offered through an agency here in Manila..
Employer wants me to fly in by next week...( i was thinking since its start of the school term)
offer was S$2k..
i need some tips and advice as to how i can get a cheap accommodation and how much expense i could possibly have for a month..shall my pay be enough for me to survive?

thank you!

Hi Joei, S$2K a month is decently enough for a person living in Singapore. Room rental depends actually in the area you are in. I think ranging from S$400 to S$650++ what i understand is that S$600++ is those inclusive of air con. Food from the coffee shop is about S$3-4 dollars, so (3 meals at S$4 each for 31 days is about S$380). Transport also varies, if i assume S$4 dollars a day for 20 days which will be about S$80 dollars... let me see, if rental+food+transport roughly about (500+380+80=960) S$1000 a month. That is of course excluding entertainment fee :)

Hope it helps, let me know if you need more information. Glad to me out.

Rents are going up and it's become almost impossible to find a room below S$600, or at least S$700-800 with aircon, even more if you don't want to share the bath and be allowed to cook.
Also, plan on average S$5 per meal (more if you want non-local food or alcoholic drinks), and public transport not just for workdays (you're not staying at home all weekend, do you?).
Add another S$200-300 for internet, phone, clothes, toiletries, etc.
Then it's almost S$1400 a month.
If you survive on less, you can call yourself a hard guy - but do you want such a life?

I highly suggest that you don't follow above poster's recommendation: Job-hopping is frowned upon by the Singapore authorities and, since you have to cancel the EP for your old job before getting the one for the new job, you might end up with none and having to leave Singapore if the new one is not approved.
This is very likely to happen if you change within the first year, and might still happen up to two years!
