I never say anything x-rated.? Kneeing a guy in the crotch is PG-13 at most.

Asad_theleo

lolz... ok then wht does this Chinese mean?

ElefteriaVenizelou

Hi Claire!
I saw your quite old post.
Decided to reply however.
I lived in Brussels for 7 years :)
No, I never learned Dutch and I never really lerned French (to complicated for me!) So I was managing with English pretty well in Brussels.
But what is an issue?

Bazil40

I have been in Hungary for 7 years, and though I spoke Magyar as a child I forgot it all after my grandad died - no-one else in the family learnt it.? Now I rely on the few words and sentences I can say and hand signs, with German as a kind of fall back!? But the young people here learn English from quite early on in school so I manage!? Magyar is considered one of the most difficult languages to learn as there is no comparative language ie if you speak English you can kind of understand German, Dutch etc, if French Italian and Spanish.

I have been studying Burmese (particularly speaking) since 2008, with the aim of moving here. I am sure I am good enough to communicate fluently with the locals. Though I cannot write much, my reading skill is also pretty good.

Gary

Yes, I did. In Germany it's almost impossible to function without speaking the language. I took three years of German in high school so I had some basic knowledge. I'm fluent in German now.

Here in Puerto Rico English is spoken by many in the metropolitan are (Greater San Juan) but in the countryside, where I live, one needs Spanish. My Spanish is OK for day-to-day use.

At home we speak Spanglish. :)

Epicuriousannie

So far I remember how to say yes, no and hello.

haggishunter

I still cant speak urdu yet.
I was offered one to one lessons at mosque but the lady wanted ?25 for half an hour and i needed an hour class.

But my host country's language isn't English.  Wouldn't that make English off-topic?

daniellim1986

well, I hold an advantage for being Chinese born in Malaysia and finish the high school here, as we are required to learn Malay, English and Mandarin, and my nana only speak dialect... and don't forget all the Korean and Japan soap, TV drama, atleast it save me lot of hassle when I travel around Asia.

And it help me to adapt quick when I travel to UK for both working and study, and learn some new dialect! Love the Geodie!! Wae Aye!!

And that when I travel to Rio de Jenario, I have to say I am struggling with the Portuguese!

In term of languages, I personally think, in order to learn it fast, you have to make it fun, people always scare to make a mistake and embarrasses themselves, and then they hold it back want to stay at their comfort zone, but we are human, is alright to make mistake sometime, and we learn from it.

How come you don't speak Chinese?

Airline2530

Hi brusselsclaire,

I am Arline and just signed up here today. I've been living in the Netherlands for more than 4 years now and I would say that I've already learned their language pretty well although speaking is still every now and then difficult for me :) But my husband said I should be proud of what I have accomplished until now in terms of learning the different aspects of the dutch language.

I hope I can be of help to you. :)

Kind regards,

Arline

I think it is crucial at leat to know the key phrases in host language. I was lucky to know German as I had to live in Germany for 1,5 years, but my husband had to learn it ;) In Almaty almost everyone speaks Russian which is one of my native languages- I'm sure that a foreigner here will struggle without knowledge of Russian.

No not learnt the language fully yet, probably won't learn it. As long as everyone smiles and say hello mister seems logical for me not to stop them.
