Cerveza Selection - What kind of beers can I look forward to?

Post new topic

So, from our limited amount of research so far, we've learned that wine is quite cheap, and that a night out at a pub won't bankrupt you the way it does here in Vancouver.

I always love to try different beers whenever I travel... so are there any beers that are local only to Paraguay that are worth trying upon arrival?

Are most of the beers lagers? Ales? Are they dark or light? Is it even possible to find an IPA there?

As well, which pub or lounge offers the broadest selection of beer?

Thanks again in advance to those who respond.

Cheers!

Nice question!  Baviera, Pilsen and Victoria local ones to try.  Most of the beers available are lager.

One of the best pubs for beer is Astoria. They have a website. There are places with local made beer too.  You can find those in Walterio wchich is a slow burguer kind of restaurant and Tiro al Aire a pizzeria.

Best!

I guess I'll have to get a little more used to lagers, as I'm definitely more of an ale guy. The darker or hoppier the better.

Whether or not I'll like the beer down there?... I guess there's only one way to find out! :)

You can get dark beer imports, from germany , you'll find them in the most bigger supermarkets, or the importer, Casa Rica , on the road to the airport.

Many thanks!

That said, I'm working on a venture that might result in a new microbrewery. If I can't find the beers I like... I'm gonna make'em!

FreeRange - I'm a big beer geek here in the states, so my last trip to PY in July I set out to explore as much as possible.

Astoria probably has the best selection of imports, as far as bars goes.  I tried their own scotch ale and was not impressed.  And not in a beer snob sort of way, it just wasn't good.  I got the impression that the owners may want to be known as a beer establishment, but it felt like a restaurant/lounge/club. (this may have been from trip last year, so hopefully they've sorted things out)

German Hefe's should be easy to find, but I didn't see a style selection outside of that.  There were also a few beers from Brazil - Colonia Malzbier is terrible, the pils is ok, as well as a stout and bock from Quilmes - ok as well if you want a change from a lager.

With that said, I preferred just grabbing a big Baviera or one of the other easy to find (and cheap) lagers.  - I didn't see any IPA's.

As far as the wine goes, you can find great Malbecs really cheap, BUT don't let the price fool you.  An expensive Malbec may not be great or even a good deal compared to what you find in the US/Canada.  I bought a pricier one figuring it would be hard to find or very expensive in the states.  Ends up it is $5 cheaper in the US.

Good luck and keep me posted about your micro brew adventure - would love to hear about what you're working on...

I am on a "casual mission" to sample all of the local brewskis. So far I have to agree that Pilsen, Baviera and Victoria are among the best. Also very good is the Brazilian fav, Brahma...stay away from Oro Fino...it's like swamp water. There are several others that I would advise to avoid. Last night we tried Patagonia from Argentina...which is a nice, distinctive brew. Another favorite is Orange Boom from Holland. All of your American beers are here with exception of Samuel Adams as far as the well knowns and the great beers of Germany and Italy as well.

In general, a cerveza lover will find it a great place to be...selection and pricing. Salud!

Did you try Astoria's Red Ale? It really scratches the itch.

That said, since our arrival in February, new beers have taken hold in this country. After the first month we got a little sick of lagers and pilsners. Back home light coloured beers just weren't our thing. However, upon first arrival an icy cold Pilsen or Baviera was quite refreshing. Now, I just need those HOPS!

So, an importer started bringing in Fuller's from the UK. They have a wide variety of brews, including stouts, porters, and (HALLELUJAH!) an IPA.

We've also heard rumblings about a microbrewery in town called Polka that makes an IPA and other varieties. But we haven't gone to try them out yet. I'll report back when I have.

I haven't tried their Red, and I'd like to give them a shot again, so I'll keep that in mind the next time I'm down.  That's good news about Fuller's!  At least you know you'll have a good stand by.  If they have any form of success, I'm sure that will open to door to other offerings.  I've not hear of Polka, I'm going to have to dig a little info up on them.  Cheers!
