kapyo trade

Post new topic

Hello all,

I'm interested in learning more about the market for second rate gas (kapyo) in Benin. Does anyone have any experience or familiarity with this?  I am a graduate student in art history who is writing on the art of Romould Hazoume, who includes many references to this trade in his work. I would appreciate anything you might know about how the oil is produced and distributed, popular ideas about it, etc.

Thanks for considering this.

Oil in Benin was only dicovered recently, and still in its infancy. What exactly do you want to know because the country has not started producing commercially.

I assume that you are talking about the gasoline for cars and motorbikes that is sold everywhere by the roadside.  The point is that gasoline is subject to high taxes, so people smuggle it in from Nigeria and then just sell it wherever they can.  So you always see people with coke bottles or larger containers sitting on the roadside: the price is lower than from a proper filling station, but so of course is the quality.
