Hi ´¡³Ü°ùé±ô¾±±ð, do thieves really run by and rip a neclace or bracelette from you as the run off? Ive heard that before.
Also I understand you really have to clutch your purse close or a man needs to keep his wallet in his front pocket?
I'm really worried about violent crimes as I am trained enough to stop the small ones. I hope somebody has some input as the crime reports i pull up dont paint a rosey picture...John

    This is MB from Dallas TX, do you have much infor going to Ecuador to live? A friend and myslef are single and actively researching about going to live there? We are trying to reach out to people about living in another country we are in the medical profession she is a RN I am a medical secretary we are going financially runined here in the states with the medial profession we are actively seeking to relocate .. We are hearing alot of Americans are moving to Ecuador to start a new life and that is us.. we are finding it economically feesible to live there but would not be in medicine would be teaching English .. We are both in our early 50's not even close to retirement at all and trying to get some answers.. Can you help ....

I'm retired and on ss and other investments.I would love to hook up with 2 people like yourselves and keep living expences very low. I hate to sound like an old hippie but the term communal living comes to mind. Ive read your post on another blog and thought about you both. They pay pretty nice sign on bonuses in houston if you are an rn. wouldn't that be great to find an inexpensive place with 3 bed rooms to live with 3 incomes.
As soon as I hit 50 yo my income went to hell in houston witch is wat brings me to ecuador or maybey panama. the city would be best for your lines of work....John

Regarding the crime in Ecuador. It for the most part is confined to crimes of opportunity. If you leave your back pack unattended on the bus or a restaurant? It'll get ripped off. If you wear expensive, gawdy jewelry, or have an expensive camera hanging off your neck? Good chance it's gonna get a new home. But... how safe do you feel walking in the French Quarter in New Orleans with your wallet in your back pocket?
It's all a matter of being aware, and minamizing your exposure to criminals, where ever you are.
As far as serious, life threatening crimes? I actually feel safer in Ecuador. You can do some statistical research. Take any major city in the US, and compare it to Cuenca, and I'll bet anything, the serious crimes against the general populace is much lower in Ecuador/ Cuenca.

Thank you Neil you are tuely correct the US is going in the tank and Dallas all that is on the news is missing people, killings, accidents, its everywhere to be candid with you you just have to be smart .. Thank you for the kind information Its time for a change in our lives what we have left ...

Sadly, what we are talking about is true throughout the US. It's just a sad commentary on the country. I look in my local paper today, and it's just filled with inhumanity. Don't know how we got to this point.
The good news is this... just about every face you see in Ecuador has a smile on it. Cool, huh?

I agree with Zenspike it is all crime of opportunity here.  If you flaunt it you risk losing it. 

But then again I live in "big bad Quito" and I see people walking around with their Iphones and such all the time.  I personally don't like walking and talking on the phone on the streets here but maybe a certain part of it is paranoia. 

The fact is that Ecuador has a higher poverty rate than America, and with poverty comes need, which turns to desparation, which turns people to stealing. 

Being obviously wealthy here can make you a mark for a theft or other sort of robbery.

People contact me directly all the time worrying about the crime here and I always ask them "well, where do you currently live?"  They usually tell me some American city like St. Louis or Baltimore or such, and I explain that where they live now is far more dangerous for things such as Rape and Murder, but watch your wallet and your phone here.

Thanks Mike very helpful. Ive read so much about home roberys and rape and kidknapping in panama. Doesnt seem to be the case in Ecuador, I hope. Any input on that would be nice....John

Harley guy.  The truth is that crime is on the rise EVERYWHERE.  I personally feel that the USA pads their crime statistics.  I feel the USA has become quite dangerous. 

Ecuador has all of the crime every other place has.  You just need to be aware of your surroundings and be very skeptical of those trying to "help" you on the street.

Themiddleoftheworld, I think you are probably right. I grew up street wise and raised myself. I kinda had an idea that expats were in the crosshairs for kidknapping as i think the crooks think we have money. Columbia i think is probably the worst.If they cut off my finger to send to my family that would make me mad as there is NOBODY to send it to...LOL That makes me very vulnerable to women as I am a little more lonely than most. I am looking for friends so I at least have some kind of base when I come down.
I have a lot of assets and no money. I will probably take a beating on the larger assets I own. Thanks So very much for taking the time to write me, it helped.

It would be interesting to have people state their experience regarding crime here. In Loja, I have never been a victim of crime, or felt unsafe. Same is true of my experiences in other cities except Guayaquil. I suspect that sometimes I am being unfair, but I really don't feel safe in that city. My apologies to those who love Guayaquil.

i just want to say that i have been on many forums, and you are the only administrator that seems to get involved in what is discussed on any forum.  you keep the forum focused on the topic and even make suggestions on where someone's topic might be most useful to them and others with similar questions.  from my experience, most administrators are out there somewhere, with no personal investment in the forums they oversee.  you are definitely one of a kind.  i realize that as an administrator, you have to be neutral, but i and am sure others would love to hear you take on the many questions people like me ask.  you are doing a great job.
