Hi , My name is Georgina and intend to retire from teaching next spring. i already have a flat in Izmir. I am looking to find out what it's like living there. i've been visiting izmir for many years and speak enough Turkish to get by. i don't know any expats there, i have always mixed with the locals, or kept myself t o myself, as i was there for only a few weeks at a time. I Would really find it helpful if I could get the answer to any of the following sp I could start planning:How much do you need to live on in Izmir, ifyou don't need to pay rent and want to have a comfortable life there? Is it safe ti live on your own ?  Many thanks in advance.

izmir is generally very cheap - i very much think that it is the cheapest big city in turkey.

even if you pay rent you dont need much if you compare life to istanbul and antalya. eating out, for example, will be ridiculously cheap in almost all cases - sometimes you may even feel ashamed how little you are paying for the stuff you had and service you received. but you'll get used to it.

i cant give you exact cash amount for the question you asked, since your expenses would be according to your lifestyle and what you are used to do. but, in all cases it would be much cheaper than istanbul, ankara and antalya.

it is generally very safe to live on your own. of course, there would be areas you would not be so safe, however this is not so different in any city. you havent said where you had your flat, so i cant make a comment. but, all the major districts like goztepe, karsiyaka, alsancak, bornova would generally be quite safe.

Although I have never lived in Izmir, I can inform you based on my trips to Izmir and the rumours I have heard so far.

It is generally said that people of Izmir so sincere and warm-blooded.

Izmir is one of the best places to live in Turkey. You can find night life, and also tranquility depending on the place in Izmir. You can enjoy seaside nearby, like Çeşme or other towns by the sea.

I am looking for foreign people to meet, to talk to, and to go out.

Dear Georgina
I am responding to your post as I am planning to move to Izmir around spring. My name is Daryoush, I am an English teacher. I know some about the city of Izmir. Its a quite, beautiful, calm
city. I have visited the city only once, and really enjoyed my time. As far as expenses, it depends on how do you want to manage your spending. I believe, 400 US dollars a month would be sufficient to survive on food and eatery. Off course, hobbies and habits have their own spending.
Note: By the way, I am looking for a flat or flatmate. If you're interested, please respond, so we can put some times to talk about it.

Sincerely,
Daryoush

Hi,

I am Tayfun, native Turkish, who live in Izmir..

Izmir is so safety and good place to live.. I don't know which district of Izmir you have flat in.. if you know Turkish you can easily have social life too..

Izmir is cheap, for example;
1 kilo meat is between 10 and 15$
1 kilo tomatoes is 0.5$ (in general vegetables and fruits are around this)
Public transportation is aroun 0.5$

Winter is not cold, you will not spend so much to heater

10$ for water bill, 10$ for electricity, 10$ for gas, 10$ for internet.... Monthly...

One cup filtered coffe is around 2$
