newcomer needs advice :)

Post new topic

Hi All,

I'm newcomer in Budapest and would really need some good tips about the city: what to visit, good restaurants etc.

Would also really appreciate if somebody knows a teacher of Hungarian language for English speaker.

Many thanks,
Mihaela

Hi, and welcome!

Spring is here, you could just go out anywhere where it's green and meet people, most young people speak some English and will be happy to talk to you, help you get started, and maybe become your friends in time.

My advice is to join in some sort of activity where you can meet people - can be anything - diving, 4WD cars, singing, book club.

Personally, when I go abroad I sometimes seek out the 3H groups (Hash House Harriers). It's a running club but actually you don't have to run, you can walk. It's styled as "a drinking club with a running problem" but it's no athletics club. It's an easy way to meet people as you just turn up at the right location (usually found on the Internet), take the walk, talk to the people on way, pay EUR 10 at the end and down a few beers while singing silly songs. Alcohol is optional (there's soft drinks usually). The amazing thing is that 3H manages to work in such an ad-hoc manner. Just turn up and go!

I like the sound of HHH so did a search and there's a regular meeting in Budapest. Here's the details as published:

Sundays on every week. Meeting place: Batthyany ter square, upper riverbank parapet wall over M2 line subway stop, at 11:30am. Venues are advertised in The Budapest Sun
Hash e-mail: budapesthash @gmail.com
Ference "Rabies" Domjan: (M):+36 20 971 6187
e-mail: rabies @freemail.hu

Unfortunately it's too far for me to travel just to take a walk/run and go for a drink.

Yes, it is a bit far away. However, you could start one in Eger. There's no centralised organisation to HHH! Just make it up as you go along. It's all completely classless. You could be talking to the head of a large corporation one minute and chatting to a volunteer language teacher the next.

The terminology is rather strange but worth learning. Quite a lot of info and background is here:

Anyone attending the hash should know the songs to a degree but it's hardly necessary. That's just at the end for the down-downs (drinks) and you can mumble your way through it. After down-downs sometimes people go for dinner. Entirely voluntary!

BTW, you will almost certainly get a hash name on your first visit if you mention to the MisManagement that you don't have one. You might be "forced" to drink something at high speed as a form of initiation. I note that the Hungarian organiser's hash name is "Rabies". Nice!
