I read this newspaper article today and just can't believe this crap still happens. Makes me not trust anything in the system.
Now you don't even need to go to college anymore; just pay someone to go for you instead.
those who take the jobs usually make around VND70,000-100,000 per class (USD3.4-4.8) in exchange for attendance and taking notes. Some ask for additional fees if they are required to take tests.
Money is paramount. Ethics? Wh...whw...what's that?
On the flipside, I came across an article reminding me that learning for the sake of hope and joy, makes me believe in the system again.
Old teacher Tran Thi Thoa, 60 years old, has helped many disabled kids to learn how to read and write. She said: "Just they can read a paragraph or do a calculation, I feel very happy then."
I wish I knew this sooner
But back then I didn't have any money for such service
I worked my way through college (legally) taking notes professionally for people who didn't want to attend .. the service was supposed to be so they could pay more attention in class and let someone else take the notes, but you can guess how it worked out.
I also ghosted term papers, which was a lot more shady. But, as every former porn star says when she's exposed in her new careeer ...
"I was young! I needed the money!!"
I sure learned a lot in both gigs. And got really good at research.
Soon there would be an app which would download and transfer all knowledge to your brains. Heck! you won't even need brains. Just a smartphone!
iThink!
Hell !!!
You can buy Uni degrees on the net... become an instant BA of whatever you want...
i.e.
Also you don't need a stomach to eat street foods by exploiting others if there is another 'app'!

I don't think you need either. Just ask inane questions on an expat forum! From 'where to find a coffee shop' to 'should I move overseas'. No need for Google search,no need to discover something in real life.
yes, last night I watched Legendary: Tomb Of The Dragon, as I see Doctors and Scientists in other countries, they have a purpose which they desire to reach. But in Vietnam, they just study to have a certificate which helps them get a higher salary. However, we also must accept that our gorvenment cant give them enough to live and do research.
it's really a vicious circle.
I find people with brains sexy. Besides, what to feed zombies if we don't have brains ?

That's a funny ad banner. Looks like it's for an online degree though. I don't know; If I was an employer, I'd really scrutinize the applicant more so than to care about what/where they got their degree. I'm starting to think that the whole going to college is one big scheme. You only use maybe 20% of the academic stuff you learn in college; most things that you use your brain for in the workplace involve critical thinking and problem solving. In other words college prepares you to "how to think".

I dont think so. It's serious. Someone also sent email for me about that. My friend also can buy an certificate without study.
I don't think any university commission/government give accreditation for these kinds of practice
If so what will be the future? What is the use of spending years in university as day scholar?
Of course if it is an accredited degree/diploma then the employers are compelled to give opportunities!

But in VN you learn a lot more in high school. American high schools don't teach calculus or physics at all, and very little biology. In fact thanks to religious conservatives, biology is watered down to nothing.
I got a degree in mathematics, and I ended up writing software, and have not had any occasion to solve any nonlinear differential equations while writing programs

That would be news to my son. He is in the 9th grade and taking pre-calc this year and will be taking both physics and calc next year.
Granted he is in an accelerated program, but these courses are normal 11th and 12th grade courses in his school district.
surprise surprise we had this at Curtin uni 2 years ago
and that's why the Asians will take over the world muahahahaha
uhm I mean most Asian economies will outpace the North American and Europeans' country in the future while the Americans have their play and fun on borrowed money.
Agree VTD, until the paradigm shift in what is THE most sought after resource. There was a time when the resource SALT ruled the world and thus the kingdoms. Now it is oil and it's byproducts. This too will not last forever. Then too if land mass was the key element then Singapore would not have the 4th highest GDP in the world. But in todays world what you say is true I think to a great degree.
Most Asian countries don't have the ridiculously high National debt to gdp ratio as the North Americans and European countries. Than if you break it down further to provincial and municipal levels they are so in debt as well that paying the interest is their top 5 expenses. Even the consumers are loading up on ridiculously high debt.
The bubble is so big it's ready to explode. All it needs is the interest rate needle to return to normal 6% range. Once tapering begins, bond yields will spike, fixed mortgage rates increase and the dominoes will fall everywhere.Â
Asians are smart but why the heck can't they be innovative like the Americans.
VTD, if it were about land mass and resources then Argentina, Russia, and Brazil would be the richest countries instead of Singapore, Switzerland, etc. Culture, education, legal and political systems, hard work, etc. all matter too. You may be right that the US will do relatively well now that it has the tailwind of cheap energy from shale gas but, as Khanh44 points out, much of the growth of the last 20 years has been paid for by debt and this debt is a burden on future growth. Also, several recent studies show a strong correlation between economic inequality and slow growth. The US has had the steepest rise in economic inequality of all the major economies over the past 30 years, and particularly over the past 6. So US dominance is not assured simply because it has a larger land mass and more resources.
And Khanh44, I'm not sure that America is actually that much more innovative--certainly on the scientific/technical front. But the companies are exceptionally good at marketing, branding, and understanding what the consumer wants. Also, the US has traditionally be open to immigration by the best and brightest of foreigners which has been a huge strength. Think of all the US companies which have either been started or led by immigrants: Google, ATT, Ebay, Yahoo, Pepsi...
Khanha44,
I think the reason many Asian countries, or poorer countries in general are not leaders in innovation because of cheap labor. Much of the West innovation is born out of a desire to reduce labor costs. In the poorer countries labor is far cheaper than the cost of the new technology.
For example I know a person here who works for a multinational country that sells high tech distribution systems and tried to sell to companies here. The reply they always receive is, " why should I spend XXXXXXX for your Technology when I can hire 2,000 employees to do the same thing cheaper.
By the way the Congressional Budget office is saying as of last month that the U.S debt/GDP is 73%. Hope we can find buyers of those bonds for a long time in to the future. Heaven help us if they don't. Or if the proposed basket of currencies for international settlements takes hold. If so few will want or need dollars.
I didn't want to get too in-depth with innovation seeing it might lead to a political discussion. But capitalism helps. Greed fuels innovations. Having patents and regulations ensures your ideas is not being infringed or copied on. Having a free open market to sell the products. Not paying your teachers for a degree certainly helps a lot.
The political system in North America lately has been too heavily weighted towards special interest groups that any cost cutting would spell a doomed political career.
Is there a specific question here or are you just making generalizational statements?
The Americans now rank at or near the bottom of the OECD in Problem-Solving ability, Literacy, and Numeracy:
So, do you actually think that the Finns and the Koreans, will lead us this century? Or the Brits and Russians will be after-thoughts in the coming years?
I think not. As a matter of fact, I would go to war with any of those illiterate fellas anytime and against anyone.
Not sure what is the purpose of being able to "lead us". By various measurements of median income, longevity, health, education, the US is no longer a leader, and, in fact, seems to be in a position of constant relative decline.Â
But maybe you are onto something: military supremacy is unquestionably an attribute of the US, and perhaps war is the only way it can regain leadership in the areas I mentioned above, i.e. by physically devastating other nations.

Yes, speak softly and carry a BIG stick per Mr. Roosevelt I believe!

Wild_1, J.M.H.O. BUT -
Disregarding the Finn's for a moment,(no snow or high alpine mountains in southern VN for their military specialties )
The Koreans have already invested very heavily in Viet Nam and are now starting to reap the benefits of all the decades of financial investment. Somehow I don't think the Korean's are about to poop in their own nest now that their investments are starting to pay off.
On the military side, the R.O.K. army is very tough, well equipped and trained but extremely brutal
The Brits are over extended just trying to keep a lid on their own home problems with their tea-towel head gear wearing citizens
As for the Russians, go to Thailand, areas like Phuket that the Russian mafia now virtually owns 100%. (went there 18 months ago)
On Phuket now MOST (95% plus) of the roadside billboard and advertizing on all the buildings, etc. on the roads from Patong Beach to Phuket's airport, are in Russian with (maybe) a small smattering of Thai underneath)
Have a look at the way the Russians there treat the local Thai people. Admittedly, not quite all the Russian tourists are as badly mannered, ill tempered when they don't get their own way about everything or badly behaved as the majority we saw there.
Russians started going to Thailand as tourists, then started promptly started buying out every piece of real estate they could lay their hands on.
Ask yourself if you want Viet Nam to go the same way ?
Let the Vietnamese people lead themselves into their future ! They are more than capable of doing that for themselves.
Flip465,
If you want a taste of the Russian's in VN head to Nha Trang, they own it as well, or well on their way. The main reason I decided not to settle in NT.

bta87,
the 'BETTER HALF' refuses point blank to let me go there.
I've never won even one minor 'disagreement' with her over the past 5 plus years, so I don't see any chance of me going to Nha Trang anytime in the near future.
Well, guess I could, but it would mean getting locked out of the main bedroom for about a month or so when I got back.
