Greet from a new member. I moved to Thailand tho months ago leaving UAE behind me -- from deset into the jungle ))
I hope that, thanks to this great forum, I will find many useful information, and introduce some nice people.
I arrive in Phuket in 13 days!
So excited. I'm going to be teaching, but at the moment, that is the only certain bit of information I have about my move. It's a two year contract, so I'm hoping to make new friends and soak up any advice people may have.
I'm 28, English. Have been teaching at a secondary school in Cornwall for the past 6 years. I had enough of the rat race, rain and humdrum, so decided I needed to experience more of what the world has to offer and concentrate on me. So quit my job and here I am.
My aim is to live a less westernised lifestyle, learn Thai, get fit, meet new people and to learn all that Thai culture has to offer.
I enjoy exploring, travelling, conversations, cooking, meeting new people, supporting good causes... In fact, pretty much everything apart from deep sea open water which terrifies me!
Good luck with the new start! I think you've made a great move - I know lots of teachers here and they have a fantastic time - getting away at weekends and being able to travel in their holidays!
Which school are you at? Is it in International one?
I'm Singaporean and lived in Hatyai after the Phuket Tsunami. Hatyai is crowded these days compared to before.......was thinking of a more suitable countries for retirement now..........just need to sell some of my condo units here and relocate.

Thanks for your reply, I'm currently looking through your website - what to pack wasn't sure at first if it was going to take me to an x-rated site; the name made me giggle!
It's an international primary, I start on Dec 1st, so wanted to give myself a little time to explore first.
Lol.....silly name that can never be use in reputable blog's, anyway thanks.
My x-rated comment was for hotbuthappy but it seems to have added to this thread?! I'm confused
Tiriya is a lovely name! X
Loveisintheairmiles, it's called KIS - I can't believe its all finally happening
Greetings,
My name is Jim. I will be relocating to Pattaya in just a couple months. I have family there and a job waiting.
I am well traveled but am bringing no friends with me. So I felt it would be nice to begin meeting some people with local knowledge and have a pint when I get there.
Thank you for the friendship we may begin here.
Hello possible new friends. I move to Pattaya in December. I have family and a job waiting but will only know two people in the country. That is one reason I am posting here, to meet new folks. See you soon, talk with you sooner.
Jim
Phuket nice beaches before but not sure these day, Hatyai now too many high rise condos coming up, just live by the day like everyone else do.

Hi..I'm shark.. I'm new in BKK. Hope i can get more friends..
I've been traveling for around 6 months. My trip began in Northern British Columbia about 30km up the Maurice towards the Crystal Valley. Knowing I had to make it to my brothers wedding in Switzerland, I went tree planting for a second time to make some quick money. I worked extremely hard and pushed myself mentally to overcome all the obstacles that the mind creates. I made it to the wedding and it was a wonderful celebration.
Afterwards, I still had quite a bit of money. I caught a flight to Malaga in the south of Spain and made my way up north to Barcelona by train.
A friend asked me to meet him at a festival called Soundwave. I agreed and immediately flew to Split, Croatia for some relaxing beach time and dancing. We said our goodbyes and parted ways. I made a plan to go camp by myself in the Krka National park and prepared accordingly. 5 minutes before hopping on the bus and a stranger approached me. He was traveling with a group that had one extra spot in their van and asked if I wanted to go to a festival in the mountains of Zadar. 3 hours later, I found myself experiencing a whole new genre of music I had never heard before. I was so intrigued that I carried on in my exploration of this music and culture. It brought me to Hungary for the famous OZORA festival.
In an extraordinary location surrounded by tons beautiful artwork, I met a very smart Hungarian girl. We made a plan to go fruit picking in the south of France but stopped off in Godollo before embarking west. In that time she had an accident and broke her foot. The damage was done and she was limited to a wheelchair. I made the decision to stay and worked for her parents at the International Language Institute.
Seeing a gap in time, I applied for a one month intensive CELTA degree in Budapest. Once again, I challenged myself mentally and found a world full of opportunities. Days after finishing the CELTA course, I realized I had 3 days left on my travel visa. I made yet another impulsive decision to move to Thailand where I could continue to explore the skills I found teaching English.Â
Now I'm here in Chiang Mai and enjoying the people and culture. I'm just not sure where to start or what schools will have me. I'm eager to work ASAP. At this point any suggestions would be very helpful.

What was the name of the documentry
Hi,
I'm new to this Forum. I currently live in San Francisco. I am very interested in finding all possible information on retirement in Pattaya. I watched a very interesting documentary on a European channel and apparently there is quite a large community of expats there. I would love to hear about it or from any other place where women can retire and be safe. The Buddhist way of life is very attractive after a lifetime in the US.
Devi
Gosh i can't remember. it was on DW, which is a German TV channel we get in the US. It was mostly about women retiring in Pattaya.
So you visit pataya on a regular basis
Never been and moving there soon. You?
Hello all,
I am currently living in New Delhi and I have recently accepted a position with a firm in Bangkok. Looking forward to the move! Before India I was living and working in Afghanistan for 3 years. Before that...let's just say "all over". I have never been to Thailand before, except in transit. I will be looking to rent something in the Silom area so I can be close to work.
Best regards,
Mike
Hi Devi,
I am a female Thai Canadian who had traveled around Thailand many times. As a women looking to relax I wouldn't retire in Pattaya. Pattaya is a fun place that is very lively at night. Most older men like to go party there without their wives (if you know what I mean)... It can be a nice place for some but a little short on Thai culture. Many of my parents friends have retired in Kamala Beach, Phuket (my mom lives there now). Kamala is the next bay over from Pattong (main beach) 15 minutes from a good party. My parents and there friends have been going there for the last 40 years..
The south of Thailand has a high population of muslims. They do have temples or as we call them Watts, which are everywhere in Thailand. If your goal is to be beach side you can also check out some of the bigger islands like Koh Samui but you will find the majority of retired expats in Phuket or Pattaya. If you are looking for culture I would head up North to Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai region. Lush green jungles, full of Thai traditions and mainly Buddhist.
If you want to know more about Kamala Beach or my personal opinions on specific places, let me know!! Hope this helped
Hi Julien, hello everyone.
My name is Russ. I'm an Aussie, 45yo I visited Thailand recently this year (2014) in September. I had heard all the stories of Australians retiring and retiring early and moving to Thailand, and prior to my trip to Thailand I never gave it much thought. But what can I say after having visited Thailand!
Thailand is really an amazing place with amazing people, beautiful scenery, can be a little crazy though but nothing like Vietnam. So and my plan now is to retire early, in about 5 year's. I would then like to move to Thailand on a retirement visa and live a relaxing, stress free life.
Cheers
p.s. like to find out a little more about me, check my profile...
Which part of Thailand are you thinking about?
I think it's a great move. I am leaving for a new life in Phuket in 7 days. Once you've been to Thailand, I think you fall in love with the place.
Hi Pink
not sure yet where I want to live, wouldn't mind somewhere close to the ocean. But like I said not sure yet. Have lots of research I need to do before I start making these types of decisions.
I'll be in Phuket at Xmas maybe we should grab a drink?
u need to be 50 years old to retire in Thailand
if single you need to prove that you have money to live here each year
800K baht in the bank for 2 months before you can apply
or 65K per month letter stamped and approved by your Embassy or Consulate
My husband and I recently moved to Bangkok. We've lived in many countries over the past 19 years, recently having moved from the US. I am still unpacking a few boxes but am looking forward to exploring this fun city. My interests are in textiles. I am hoping to find an English speaking quilting/stitching/knitting group preferably in the Sukhumvit area. We are living on Soi 49. Hope I hear from other fabricholics soon!
Hi llinllinn,
Thank you for the info. The reason I mentioned Pattaya was because of what i saw in the documentary I watched, misleading maybe? I'll definitely check out the places you recommended. At this point I know I would like to be very close to the beach, in the local community where expats reside. I definitely do not want to be in a segregated expat community. I want to embrace the culture. And I definitely do not wish to be in a party town.
PM me if you have more details of maybe contacts?
Thank you and hope to hear from you soon.
Devi
every city in the World has its groups
you can party when you want and walk the beach at other times
hang out with friends
in Pattaya you can have it all
theres even a few expat clubs
