We finally have a place...

So we just closed on a condo in Fajardo... I think we made the right choice... the area is close to basically everything and about an hour from San Juan. The only thing so far is the smell occasionally from what I think is sewage from the marina... I have no idea how people can stand that smell.

Congrats on your condo and Welcome to Puerto Rico. Fajardo us beautiful and there is a lot to do there. Enjoy yourself.

Congratulations!!!

The smell could be because of the high levels of algae due to the weather that is around the island during this time. I have hear from my family in PR that most of the coastal waters are having excess algae concentrations and the beaches smell like rotten seaweed.

This July I was close to the marinas and also Maco Beach. The beaches around the Fajardo marinas had a strong putrid smell, we decided not to look at anything around there.
They should pickup the seaweed and dispose of it to get rid of the smell. But I guess it has not occurred to them or they don't have the funds.
They can probably use prisoners to clean up the beaches of seaweed and trash, but I guess they have not think of that.

I rarely ever smell it unless we drive by the marinas... but yes i was thinking they could do something...

That area has a lot of high value properties, you would think the government or neiborghood would get a few funds to hire a crew to clean up and not smell it. I walked away, other potential buyers would also walk away.

This may not be the case but when the tide is out mangroves have an odor  of decaying vegetation. I smelled it in the Florida Keys and in areas in Puerto Rico where there are mangroves.
