Wal-Mart coming to Vietnam!!!!

Post new topic

Walmart is one of the biggest companies in the world. Everywhere it goes it swallows up its competition. The 15 CEOs are payed roughly $ 37.000 a day that's without their huge bonuses of about $18 million - $15 million in stock options -$ 3 million in non equity investments. The average worker however is on $10 an hour. The little old Vietnamese lady sitting in the market all day selling her produce making a few dollars a day, and the shop keepers trying to make a living will always get my money.  I will always get a smile and a welcome and I know these people personaly. That's why I love Vietnam and I'm more than happy for Walmart to stay in America .

Is tourism down?
I am concerned for the locals who sell what they make or grow in the markets...

So noble of you to share your concern for the locals. I'm also concerned for those kids and old ladies who constantly shoving their lotto tickets or packs of gums in front of my face while I'm eating. Seriously, for Vietnam to move ahead and attract future tourism, these activities need to be stopped. I also blame the restaurants or the mom and pop shops for allowing these people to show up and bother their paying customers.

So what would you suggest these people do to earn a living, the number of homeless and beggars have decreased.
These people exist in most countries in the world, tourists are not affected in Vn anymore than in Rome or New York.
Tourists are being deterred by the US $ value, hotels in HCM are increasing there rates by unreasonable amounts, check out Airbnb, look at there prices, mostly ridiculous....

This is the Vietnamese government's issue and not mine to solve. Why don't you name a place in the U.S where people come up to you at a restaurant selling you cigarettes or gums?

drutter

Okay, thanks for the information.

michaellieptourists

No, it is not the Governments issue, it is called competition, when the tourists stop coming, prices will drop.
We have traveled the US, people want and need money, food. Cigarettes are very commonly asked for. Asians in general, look after each other, more than can be said for the US....

When people don't have jobs and turn to 'begging' that's a social issue, hence, the government is responsible. Again, I'm asking you where in the U.S do you see that people come up to you at a RESTAURANT selling or asking for money? Not at some random street corner as it happens everywhere on this planet.

On second thought,I just noticed that you are from Australia so it is moot to ask that question.

michaellieptourists

FYI, we have traveled the world extensively and spend a lot of time in Vn.
Australia would surprise you, we have plenty of poor and homeless.
Happens in the US when you leave the restaurant, bit of a stretch to compare US to Vn...

Seems that everything has been said here. We are now closing the topic. Thank you.
