RM 8000 in Selangor area for a single guy, doable?

Hi community,

I'll start off by saying that this forum has been a great resource while evaluating the pros and cons around this big decision, so thanks for that :)

I am a single guy, 23 years old working in IT and I have been offered a role in a good company somewhere around Bandar Utama area in Selangor. I am being offered about RM 8000 per month (basic) and the perks are nothing notable.

I am looking forward to lead a simple enough life in Malaysia with some basic requirements looked after for, and I have certain queries and it would be of great help if someone could help me out.

1. Accommodation:
A decent enough place to stay (sharing or not), with enough room for my 2 laptops and a monitor and other tech things which I will carry with myself. Other than that, I can live just fine being a minimalist. What do you guys recommend for a calm place to sit and work with minimal distractions? How about renting a place near Kuala Lumpur, will it be feasible? I want to rent somewhere near my work place which nearby decent areas do you recommend? Nothing lavish, just a productive place with a huge table.

2. Food and Drinks:
Being a teetotaller vegetarian, what do you guys say I will end up spending on food every month? Here in India, eating all 3 meals outside is not a good idea because of the reused oil and other hygienic factors involved, how is this in Malaysia? Is outside food nutritious and dependable enough to get me throughout the day or will I have to get my hands dirty at home (I so don't want to do that except cooking in a less demanding English breakfast style), also not a fine dining guy but yes, a big big foodie.

3. Travel:
I am not looking forward to buying a car there but it has been suggested a lot everywhere I see, any particular reason for that? How about a bike or a motorcycle (nothing fancy)? Does it rain a lot and is public transport reliable? How about cabs, cheap enough (Uber and others)?

4. Communication and Wi-Fi:
Other Indian expats living there, what about the call rates there? This app, Ringo, it says INR 1.50 per minute, has anyone tried that? My network carrier says ~ INR 10 per minute!
And how about the Wi-Fi costs there? How much should I spend to get a ~ 10 mbps unlimited plan there?

5. Taxes:
I can see that for the first 6 months ~ 26% tax will be taken away from me, and then later returned! How much will be the tax deductions after that?

6. Savings:
How much can I save after living the kind of lifestyle I just mentioned?

Overview:
Do you guys think this is a good enough salary to spend some and to save some for now? Should I go for it?

Thanks in anticipation for the replies that I will get, any help is much appreciated and needed.

Regards.

Hi as i said privately at age of 23 8k is good considering your qualifications and experience.

A car will cost you min of 1500 rm per month. That is a big hit on your salary so live near a suitable bus route.

Accomodation 1000 rm is min for a decent flat share near public transport. Own place 2000 rm.

Tax is complicated - you wont get tax back anything unless tou started in a 6 months cycle of 1 jan to 30 june amd 1 july to 31 dec. Your HR may be working on old rules. Rules change by the day lol or more by who is your tax officer.

For budgeting assume you get nothing back (quite likely now) for 6 months. Anyone who started more than a year ago will claim otherwise. But rules are being enforced now.

Even if you get tax back put in seperate account and expect to have to pay it back. Happened to colleagues!

To remain tax resident in first 6 months do not leave malaysia. After that 2 weeks max a year (after 3 tax years it is 3 months).

Again many dont know about this especially HR departments! I know as ex colleaugues had to pay tax back of 10,000s of rm when they left. Ouch!!!!

Thanks Nemodot, you've been of great help throughout.

Could you tell me a bit more about  the accommodation part, since that's the biggest hit on my salary.

I'm considering a separate room since sharing has it's own challenges, but not a separate apartment. I'm wanting something like a small bedsit ().

So, how much will I have to keep aside to get a small but convenient bedsit like place near Bandar Utama?

Thanks!

Nemodot

Bandar Utama well I know you can get a little cheaper if a house share. condo is about 1k for something seni decent with three to a 3 bed condo.

cheap would be 600 RM per couch surfers I know . they are usually early 20th and earning little and if not with family go for house shares.

A bed sit would be 1.5k cheapest as small condo place 400 Sq ft is about that anywhere min.

Most condos in that area start at 3 now. anything under is old place or has issuesome but under 2k means even cockroaches refuse to live there! or drug problem etc

Okay, I get a basic idea. Could you please list a couple of housing/property websites where I can take a look to get general trends around the area?

Thanks for all the help!

Nemodot

you can't get a condo for 1k in banda utama as I looked last year and cheapest one bed 1600 rm per month.

I used to live there and believe me house and condo prices / rents will make a grown man cry!

Yes, I searched a bit online and that's true.

But I think I should be able to find something cheap and good in Subang Jaya or Brickfields and nearby areas which is near public transport facilities and commute daily or get a light motorcycle, what do you think?

WRosli

Get a cheap used car and junk it in a couple years.  You can get a decent used car for less than $15k.  Motorcycle? Don't get one, unless you are an expert rider.
