Moving to Laos with your family

Post new topic

Bhavna

Hello everybody,

When settling abroad with your spouse and children, the expatriation process requires an extensive preparation.

What are the considerations to take into account when moving to Laos with your family? What challenges have you faced? How did your children adapt to their new environment?

What is your recipe for a successful family expatriation in Laos?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience,

Bhavna

Kindly note that this thread has been edited to focus on family expatriation

We lived in Vientiane for 5 years from 3008 - 2013 and loved it. I can share learning experiences in 3 areas.
1. Home. Neighbourhoods matter as do neighbours. Once you've short listed several potential houses take the time to go by at different hours. A quiet house on a quiet street during the day might reveal itself to be an impromptu Karaoke in the evening. Also, rent prices vary wildly, so don't be shy to counter offer at a price you seem is fair.
2. He lath.  You do not want to end up in a Laos hospital. We took All the sensible precautions and luckily stayed healthy. We also purchased health insurance from AGL at a reasonable price. We used it for minor things and everything went smooth.
3. Schools. Of course you want the best for your kids, but you don't always get what you pay for. If you have the means then there is little reason not to send your kids to VHS. We also found very good education can be had at either Kittitas International. Our kids did not fall back from their Canadian education, and actually came out ahead in maths.

Hope this helps. Have fun!

Great post from Douglas Hainsworth.

We live a little way out of Vientiane city centre near Lao ITECC.
There is a massage establishment across from out house which is up a small soi, (side street) Could not wish for better neighbors.

The standard of schooling has improved out of sight, especially in the last 10 years. Great international schools here in VT now. I have posted a list of international schools on this section of the forum.

Health care is a must. We head across to Thailand for anything major.

You must learn to assimilate, have an open mind when settling in. Remember that you are a guest in someone else's country so do not expect everything to be as it is in your country.

Children are well loved in Laos.
