Mistakes expats make in Kenya

Post new topic

Priscilla

Hello everyone,

Did you make any mistakes when you first moved to Kenya? What were they?

How did you address your mistakes? Did you learn anything from them?

With hindsight, what would you do differently?

Are there any tips you could give future expats in Kenya to help them avoid these kinds of mistakes?

We look forward to hearing from you!

Priscilla

Hey pricilah,

Well personally I have not made big mistakes that had lead me in to crises in Kenya but generally speaking avoid leaving your belongings unattended in public places even in restaurants. Be conscious of your own personal security AVOID WALKING AT NIGHT AFTER 9:00PM OR DO NOT WALK ALONE ! Yes don't put trust on strangers.

Hi Priscilla, well the first mistake I made when moving to an African country was to not say properly hi before I addressed a person. Coming from a very informal Norwegian society, we don't always do that. But here you do that for even small and quick questions like should I take left or right to go somewhere.

Another mistake I made in Kenya was using the first name to people I didn't know properly.

Another mistake was to actually believe what a person would reply when you ask for a direction, far from towns. Many will try to be polite and tell you to go right at a junction even if they don't have a clue. So you double check.

Stopping when someone points at your wheel or other car part when driving, especially at night or on highways can be dangerous. I slowed down once near Eldoret, but luckily I saw several guys jumping out from behind bushes. I got away.

It is also very interesting how many young ladies you meet out happen to have their birthday just after you have met them... A funny one - not serious...
