How to make friends in London

Post new topic

kyommey

Hi all! I am Ugandan and moved to London 7months ago. I agree that its easy to meet people from all over the world, but making good friends, like the ones back home is difficult.

I have made some good friends at church, through volunteering and at work (not too sure yet. just like anything else that is worth it, it requires effort. it is difficult but not impossible

Hi, I am a fashion student from India currently in London from last 3 weeks, no friends or anyone to hang out with. I belong to Delhi. Anyone interested for meeting up or helping me explore London in coming few weeks?
Preferably, someone from India or maybe anyone, who is lonely too just like me..

I'm a male (Project Management) Professional from Melbourne, Australia who'll be moving to the UK in early March (probably from March 8th).

Looking to meet new people and hopefully good friends to explore the city together. Very keen to explore the cultural/theatre/music/food aspect.

Will be based in London initally and hopefully finding a job soon upon arrival.

I find having a child helps. You meet other moms, start a conversation about the kids and go from there.
Alternatively I'm sure a dog will do :P. Parks are full of people walking their dogs and animal lovers easily strike up a conversation with each other.
Oh, and try volunteering. I recently started working in a charity shop and already met some great people, other volunteers and customers alike.

Good luck to you all!

Hi I am also new to London and in need of friendship and decent conversation. Would love to explore with you
I am fro South Africa and would love to learn about your country

Hi!

From experience, I'd like to suggest that you find a balance between English/foreign friends and your Ugandan community.

The typical warmth you find at your home country is different because people are different in terms of culture, behaviour and also the way they conduct friendship. So if you reach your Consulate/Embassy and any Ugandan community (like a church with more Ugandan people, for example) you will find the way to build that balance.

I think you should not be involved only with Ugandan or only English speaking people because of the risk to become an island, excluding many people (and opportunities) around you.

The balance between your people living there, the English people and the people from other cultures will help you have a richer experience and will increase the chance to find true good friends like you have back in your home country.

Also, try to look through this:
I think it is very helpful to newcomers and I have included this website in my preparation to my future studies in UK.

All the best and success!
Pedro.

Hi,

Honestly i am a bit surprised that people do feel it is difficult to make friends in London. I have personally found it to be so friendly, people are usually open minded and willing to talk/meet people from different backgrounds and cultures.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Miriamaya

hi there im looking for friends who speak french

Loetitia

Hi everyone,

It has been 5 years that I am in London and I can tell you that It is nearly mission impossible to make friends. I am french and I am used to socialise and make friends easily however in London if you do not like to spend A LOT of time on your own you will end up depressed. Solution : I am a volunteer and I try various extra activities in order to stay positive and happy...I would say that if you have a particular goal to acheive in London go for it but then do not expect too much in terms of relationships.

take care
