Looking for Car and Personal Driver

Post new topic

AnandSK

Hi!  I'm looking to buy a car and get a personal driver in my time in Jakarta.

I will be there for a year and a half from June 2018.

Any help or advice?

Fred

Skip buying the car and hire a car with driver.
That's a lot less hassle and will work out a lot cheaper as the losses on a new car would be great, more so if you have to sell quickly when you leave the country.

The rest depends on how far you intend to travel and how often.
If it isn't that much, use Blue bird taxis instead. There are loads in Jakarta.

If you do go for a driver, check his SIM (Driving licence) KTP (ID card) and, if it's his car, his STNK (registration document).
Make sure all are up to date and have the same address.

And get good insurance.

You can also set up accounts with grab or go ride or source an agency who will provide driver and car.

Long term leasing is another option.

AnandSK

Thanks for the advice!

Is this the more convenient (and cost-effective) option even if I need the car to send my son to school, and help my wife get around, besides shuttling me to office and back?

AnandSK

how much would that typically cost along with a driver?

abdulkhalil

It's really up to you. Obviously thousands of expats have a car in Jakarta, either purchased or leased. I don't live in Jakarta but would be lost without a car.

You just need to contact a car rental company and see what they charge for long term rental/leasing. As for drivers, I don't employ one because I prefer to drive myself. Perhaps a salary of Rp2.5 to Rp3 million a month. If your wife can drive and doesn't mind traffic jams then no need to

As for sending your son to school, I suggest choosing a place to live fairly close to the school.

Fred

Jakarta's traffic is a gift from Iblis.
I'm in  jam at the moment, google maps telling me I'm an hour away from my destination.
Just 7km, but an hour on the road.

I would have come in by train but I didn't get a vote.

Fred

10.46 now and 5km or 30 minutes to go.
Drive only if you have to

lukereg

Better sit it out in the car than pilchard'd in the train. The TJ bus from BSD or Tangerang City might have been a better but slighty sweatier trip in.

If you are going via Tomang then after 8am its a car park due to the odd / even rule and and the fact everyone seems to work in Senayan and everyone leaves at the same time.

The odd/even rule starts at 6am now not that it makes any difference.

Fred

11.56
just arrived

Cars are bad news here

abdulkhalil

Sounds like you two lads would be happier living in a less busy city.

lukereg

I have no issue with Jakarta but the traffic at times can be really frustrating. Some days its great others no.
Last week from the Airport in the west of the city to my home was an hours journey by car. But the trip there was 2 hours, where as the last time I did the trip it took me 2 hours to get home and an hour to get there. There is really no set pattern but the fact that most queues are caused by a bus and to prepare for the unexpected good or bad.

About 10 days ago, early evening I took a Bluebird from CGK Terminal 3 to the nearby Swiss Belhotel. It took an hour to get there instead of the usual 10 minutes. The traffic jam in the city was backed up all the way to Terminal 3. Crazy!!!

Tumund

Wow so sorry to hear what you've been experiencing in my country.
Anyway as per suggested, I do agree if it is only for year and a half better you rent a car however once you go to car rental they may charge you with international rate..
You can use grab or gojek apps for more affordable price.
Or if you want I may suggest some drivers to provide this service for you

Had first experience of new Jakarta airport terminal last sunday, Took me over 90 mins to get a taxi..BB and Non BB token system, not sure this is the best thing they could have done, Old terminals I never had any issues getting taxis.

AnandSK

Pls suggest some recommendation of friends of rental car companies or drivers if you have any. Thanks.

Ammah

A lot cheaper and faster by train.

abdulkhalil

Best way is to either take a shuttle bus directly from the airport to Bogor. You can take it from all the terminals but best to head to terminal 2 where all the buses begin their journey. You can also take the Damri bus which will only cost Rp55k.

I would definitely not recommend taking the train as it is pretty nasty and actually takes longer than the bus.

lukereg

Shuttle buses are probably the simplest way as the train whilst cheap is much slower and then you will need change at least once and pay more for the airport train.

Grab cars are good but could be pricey.

Which ever mode of transport you choose it is better leave with plenty of time spare. The toll to the airport can stop at times due to sheer traffic volume which can add a lot of time to your journey.

From Bogor to Cawang it's about an hour and from Cawang to the airport at least an hour. If take the jorr then it can be quicker or slower. Traffic dictates.

abdulkhalil

I would recommend long term car rental and hiring a private driver or driving yourself. Of course Jakarta has awful traffic jams, but hey, that's life.

Tumund

It could be pretty nasty indeed if foreigners took public transportation, not only concerning your safety but regret to say sometimes they will increase the price so you should be wary.

For alternative, Probably I could offer you a ride, of course with some gasoline cost just let me know once needed. I'll leave my contact no in pm.

abdulkhalil

Agree with above comment on taking public transport. I've heard many cases of passengers get assaulted or robbed or threatened. Apart from that, the buses get really packed solid, I mean your body will be pressed up against other people.

Great idea if you can share a ride into the city. It's what many people do and it is actually recommended for people to do that.

Online taxi I think is the best options for you to go around or just running your everyday routinwle like getting the kids to school etc. It's cheaper, you just sit and get off without thinking about parking or gas.

However if it's more comfortable for you to rent car, you can try some good and credible ones like Astra Rent Car (Trac) or Adira Rent Car (Assa). They certainly have driver service also. Hopefully they have a simple procedure for expat rent.

Good luck!

Does a WNA get 5-year SIM if his/her visa/permit is under 5-year validity nowadays?

Fred

According to people who have posted here, yes.
