The lake was wonderful, swam myself to death, so tired today, slept over 10 hours!

Well, swimming does that.  Easy way to get kids to sleep - play in the bath.  Adults - play in the lake.

It'll probably be really warm in there by the weekend. I believe there's a heatwave coming this way.

I expect that water is exceptionally clean - probably even drinkable out in the middle far away from the hordes.

Going during the week is a good idea - miss the crowds.  We came back Sunday and there were traffic queues on the way back to BUD.

One of the Perks of retirement, can go anywhere any day.
My husband hates crowds but not as much as I do.
It takes so long to get to the highway from the middle of Budapest that I force us to leave the house before 7 am, wake up time is around 5a m.
A lot of effort is put into getting to the lake. Was going to go back in the morning but think I'll put it off for another day or two before the weekend though. Monday looks like a nice hot day so that should be on our calendar . Next week it looks like it will be cooling down again.
I am so used to having 8 or 9 month summers that this short season here just feels so wrong to me.

Please keep the discussion to Today's Weather only. Type of boats on Lake Balaton, or how one gets to and from Lake Balaton is not on topic unless the weather affects your travel to and from the Lake, or you want to go sailing and want to know if it will be good sailing weather for your boat type.

Thanks.

P.S. Good wind today. Good for brisk sailing on the lake with a larger boat. Smaller boats may experience some wave chopping.

Hmmmm.......Balaton is such a tradition in Hungary, it's almost a category on its own.

I'm wondering if nice weather activities on the lake are quite OK for posting here surely?  I mean sailing isn't the only thing people do on the water.  For example, we go swimming,  kayaking and now paddleboarding and we want to know what's going on down there.  There's also landlubbers stuff like cycling, badminton, tennis or just walking.

The speedboats appearance are part of the ambience (hope it's not permanent) and overall environment of the place - they come out in good weather!

Maybe we need a Balaton Season or Outdoor activities thread?

Weather posts to any outdoor activity is fine. I used sailing as just an example.

But discussion about lake ambience due to what crafts are on the lake, or what political elites were in a boat is not weather related.

Do note, I was watching these posts the entire time, but only decided to comment after I saw this sub topic "winding down", as it had weather related issues, and only wanted to remind to try to avoid drifting too much. I happens. I understand. We are human. Thanks.

Here in the outer reaches of the Budapest burbs, I'm seeing 25 C today with cloudy patches and sunny periods.  It's very pleasant indeed. Warm enough to enjoy, not too warm to be oppressive.

fluffy2560

Very warm but drizzling a bit.  Cloudy and 31 C outside.  I had planned to fiddle about outside but nobbled now.

fluffy2560

Really hot and sunny. 38 C outside in the shade (sort of).

Clouds appearing, barometer shows rain.

Been waiting on the "rain" for days now, going to just chuck the weather reports and head to Balaton come rain or shine.
We were at the lake last week and the wind was a bit too much again.
Not bad when you are in the water but when you dry off it is chilly.
My big summer plan was to hit the lake at least 3 times per week but we have fallen short to once or twice because of the wind factor. Seriously to spend half a tank on petrol and then just freeze to death isn't such a good deal.
I get "jealous" of other lake goers, some peeps can just stay for ever and a day in the water and be fine, skinny old me, 30 mins in and I am frozen unless the sun comes out and the wind stops.
I do notice though that most people at the lake are only in the water half way and just playing around, I am gun ho and actually doing laps , all the way in the water. Perhaps I should just buy myself a huge unicorn float and chill out?

The popular inflatable I've seen down there this year are large pink flamingos. There were unicorns but didn't see any in adult sizes.

Our kids seem to be immune to cold water.  I don't know how they do it.  They are in that water all day except for stuffing their faces.

We're thinking of a trip to Velence this weekend, just to test it out - been before a few times but just for a change from Balaton and only 30 minutes from Budapest.  Probably Mrs Fluffy and kids will have to go with Mrs Fluffy's friend and kid as I've got stuff to finish up.

I've spent the past 3 days repairing and improving my guttering.  We uncovered bodging by the workers who built the place - one drain pipe actually went nowhere except into my foundations!

The sun was brutal and it was horribly hot.   And I couldn't find my hat either.  Didn't know doing guttering was so desperately tiring.

But I have to finish it while the weather is good and certainly before I have to return to normal working times in September.  Now we have to see if it rains to see if my DIY is up to scratch.  Don't want it to rain though really!

We're short on some parts for the guttering so that'll be a job for tomorrow'- back to the shop for some bits and pieces and then job done - well that particular job done. Finish it off once and hopefully for all.

The barometer is showing rain is coming - it's almost 21h and it's still 26 C outside.

Yup, it was mega sticky yesterday even with the breeze.  If it would just get up a bit of a breeze it'll be pretty good.  I think it's continuing until Tuesday when it'll rain a bit which will snooker my car repairs.

Had a 60% chance of rain last night but nothing came. Had a few drops this morning and that was it. I do feel for the UK, they seem to be having it hard with storms.

We had a sprinkling a few days ago but nothing really.  Temps are dropping now at night - down to around 15 C.  We were out last night trying to see the Perseid meteor showers but the moon was too bright really.  Saw a couple of them.  Should be more intense tomorrow.

And power cuts over there in the UK, it'll be an issue here maybe with all the airco running as climate change takes hold with more intense longer summers and warmer wetter winters.

And when the ice cap melts, we'll all be surfing on the beaches of Budapest and Vienna :)

fluffy2560

Brutally hot again. It's after 1830 and it's still 32 C outside.

Forecasts say there will be a massive downpour overnight with 26mm of rain followed by colder temperatures and then climbing back up slowly.

It feels very sticky.

Very much the same here, but getting cooler now and with the rest of the week a steady 25°C.

Wouldn't mind it the upcoming weekend is cooler, want to attend an event and will not be going if it's crazy hot outside.
Can't believe the 20th is next week, end of summer is here soon at least on paper, things close down and one can feel the change of season.
It's amazing to me to feel the weather changes, growing up in S. Ca. we had nice and nice with a bit of a chill, Hawaii was nice and nice with rain, only 2 seasons in each state.

The downpour will start at 20h! *

I am looking forward to a bit of cooler weather as then it'll be possible to do things outside without getting fried.  I've got to finish my guttering/roofing and it was so hot I could not even kneel down as you could fry an egg on the surface.   So a bit of rain would be welcome - for the moment - even just as a gutter test.

I think that's the problem with time these days - it's goes too fast.  Must caused by gravity, global warming, flat earth, black magic and The Donald.  Someone or something is to blame.

But come September it'll be back to school, back to work and by the end of October that dark and dank grind to Spring next year - January is the worst month.   Too long, too dark, too cold and too wet.

I've been quite lucky to have had a long holiday this year by juggling work demands but now I'm going to have to pay the piper - full on come September.

* we had a shower about 13h.  Got to get those garden jobs done.

Strange forecasts because we were predicted a torrential downpour and we got a bit of banging and flashing, some small amount of rain and that was it.

Today it was supposed to be raining all day.  I begin to think it's mainly guesswork. I had postponed my garden plans because of the predicted rain!  A wasted opportunity!

I guess I'm saying that your rain gauge is more accurate than the forecasts.

I'm in Balaton not far from Siofok.

Really very warm indeed.

34 C expected today.

Sky is exceptionally clear with a nice view of the stars above somewhat tempered by light pollution.

Hope to get out there this week if the rain doesn't kill my plans.
Not going out with the holiday crowds there.
I think the pollution you notice is chem trails, aluminum and God knows what else they force us to breathe  Have fun.

It's very busy down here.  There are plenty of people and it's brutally hot - 35 C at least. It's too hot really and quite humid.

I'll wait a bit until it cools down before doing anything involving being exposed to the sun.

At night it's quite OK but the mosquitoes are very annoying even with anti-mozzi sprays.

Was thinking of popping to the lake today but noticed rain warnings, plus the wind is acting up.
My husband would freak if he was getting bit by bugs, he has the "bug thing" they seem to love to feed on him.
Was considering checking out a man made lake before they close for the season, much closer to home the Balaton is.
Looks like soon it will only be an option to use a indoor pool.
We  used to go the the Rudas in the mornings, early bird special from 9 to 12.
problem is, I actually swim while that spa attracts "Old farts" ( like us!) who love to float around rather then do actual swimming laps .The pool there is so small too.
I get bored out of my mind with just sitting in the water, swim or get out of the pool. Just floating around is a waste of time to me. Not really a spa person myself, more of just a swimmer.
Went to the Turkish spa side of the Rudas once , never again. Pretty and interesting for about 10 mins is all . Sitting in water looking at skin flakes from sickly people isn't my thing .
Like the huge pool the swimming complex on Margret Island but it is hard to figure out the correct times of day to go, it is reserved for swim teams all the time.
Went there in 1978, I remember people freaking out because our nearly 3 year old son was swimming back and forth on his own in the pool like a baby pro.
People never saw anything like him before and they were in aye.
Little doggie paddle style and very cute.
Next week actually looks like lake weather , windy today and a high of 30C.Rain in the forecast but I don't think the weather reports are ever right.

GuestPoster279

Sunny, but very windy today.

Ah well, weather forecasts. Here's an on the spot report from Balaton southside.

Yes, it's very windy down here and temperatures have dropped but it's still very sunny and quite warm.  People are in the water and there are whitecaps.

I was in the lake yesterday in my canoe and in the water and it was nice floating about.  I think even with the wind, it'll still be warm in there as it's been heating up for weeks.  Mrs Fluffy and the kids are in there now and seem to be happy.

I expect with yesterday's holiday being over, fireworks all finished, it'll be a lot quieter the next few days perhaps. However, all the public sector is having 4 days off apparently - Tuesday through to Friday plus the weekend.  Nice work if you can get it.   The cafes etc are very busy with queuing even for ice cream.

It'll all start closing down towards the end of next week so make the most of it!  By Monday 2nd, it'll be all finito for another year!

fluffy2560

Balaton, near Balatonfoldvar:

Wind now dissipated, very sunny, slightly warmer than yesterday, possibly 28 C today.  Ideal cycling weather.  Chilly in the evenings, possibly below 17-18 C necessitating a blanket if outside.  Plenty warm enough in a tent with just a blanket.

Crowds dispersed following the public holiday on Tuesday 20th.

Update: cycled to Lelle and my fancy bike computer reported 34 C.

GuestPoster279

A dribble of rain last night, north Balaton.

fluffy2560

Meanwhile back at Fluffy HQ:

Lightning, slight sprinkle of H20, thundering and then....nothing....zilch...nada....rien....

Been very humid and probably about 30 C during the day.

Expected more bangin', crashin' and flashin' during the evening or early morning - barometer shows falling pressure and rain expected.

fluffy2560

Windy and rainy looking, sun trying to come out but struggling to burn off the clouds, only a fresh 12 C.  Big difference on yesterday's 22C.

Marilyn Tassy

Yes, getting gloomy out there. These past few days were so nice that we had to get out and walk around outdoors.
Now at least I have an excuse to do some inside work.
Actually going out this afternoon for a walk to an office, have to bring the old umbrella with.

We've already had the heating on - it was only 7 C this morning.

The dog obviously knew it was coming as it refused to go out last night.

Living in a massive stone house that is basically a huge mass heater from its thermal mass (an Earthship before there were Earthships) I doubt we will need to start thinking about heating for weeks still, despite outside temps.  :)

Takes a lot of energy to heat it up though but if it's solar or just acquired from ambient surroundings that's pretty good stuff.

Real earthships are fully passive.

Our house is not an earthship (for one thing, we only have three tiny south facing windows -- totally wrong design for an earthship). But our heating costs per m2 are much less than people I know here who have modern insulated brick houses. And our house breaths (I have vents into the house to let in outside air (have to -- we burn wood stoves -- but the vents do have heat exchange properties). so we avoid house sickness sometimes found in both old and new houses. Yet we still have a warm house (and less internal damp). :)

The only "problem" is, this house must be lived in. Go away for a few months, and it will get damp. The house is like part of the family. Like my wife or the dog. Needs attention and TLC. ;)

We've got  very heavy insulation - 15cm - and triple glazing.  I think regulation is 12cm now but it creeps up every few years.  Our problem is that it gets really hot even without the heating on - it only has to be sunny.  It's the roof I think as the bedrooms are built into it and  that's a pretty large area of dark tiles.  So we often have to open the windows to try and get it comfortable.  I have to sleep with the windows open even if it's 10 C outside and there's no heating being used.  Even then when I woke up this morning about 0700h it was 24 C inside and only about 11 C outside.     We should have organised it so we had a heat exchanger and air flow system but too late now.

Actually, I have news on my land dispute - I'll post it in Absolutely Anything Else if anyone is interested.
