Sending and receiving packages in Jordan

Post new topic

Priscilla

Hello,

As an expat, there are inevitably certain items you might want or need from back home, and around the holiday period, many people like to send gift packages.

How easy is it to send and receive packages in Jordan?

Is the public postal system efficient?

Do people tend to prefer using private shipping services? Which ones?

How do the costs of the private shipping services compare?

How long does it take generally to receive packages from abroad in Jordan?

Do you have to pay taxes on items received by mail from abroad?

Are packages delivered right to your doorstep, or do you usually have to go collect them somewhere?

Thank you for sharing your experience,

Priscilla

How easy is it to send and receive packages in Jordan?  Aqaba is a bit different than in the U.S.  Packages you send must be wrapped in plain boxes or paper.  You take them to the P.O. open and take sealing materials with you.  They must be approved for shipping.  A customs declaration must be filled out and put on the package.  You should put your name and address on a paper inside the package also.  Always insure your package.  It delays it, but gives you tracking capability.

Is the public postal system efficient?  A little slow and backs up at holiday time.  Residents are required to have a P.O. box.  Packages you receive should have your phone number on the outside.

Do people tend to prefer using private shipping services? Which ones?  Only in an emergency.  DHL, Aramex, TNT and Jett Post Services.

How do the costs of the private shipping services compare?  Very, very expensive.  OK to Amman, but could be 100JD to send a document to the US.

How long does it take generally to receive packages from abroad in Jordan?  Four to six weeks

Do you have to pay taxes on items received by mail from abroad?  Depends on the item.  There is a service charge now to receive a package and it has to be cleared by customs at the post office.  You open it and they inspect it.  The clearing person is only there certain hours.

Are packages delivered right to your doorstep, or do you usually have to go collect them somewhere?  There is only one post office in Aqaba and that is where you have to go for all transactions, package pick up and P.O. boxes.
