The must-try activities in Norway

Post new topic

Hello everyone,

Moving to Norway is an exciting opportunity to discover a new culture and try things you might not even have heard of before. To make sure other expats and expats-to-be do not miss a thing, would you be able to answer the following questions on activities not-to-be-missed in Norway?

What are the activities everyone must try at least once in Norway?

What are the activities that one should partake in if they want to discover the local culture?

Are there any activities that are characteristic of Norway?

Do you have an anecdote to share about any of the activities listed above?

Please share your experience,

Priscilla

Skiing and cross-country skiing are very popular in Norway, as they were invented there. Many people enjoy hiking and spending time in nature, which makes sense as Norway has some of the most beautiful nature in the world.

Of course there are the northern lights in the north, and the fjords in the west, both of which are a must-see.

A common thing to do is to take the Oslo-Bergen train line, an 8-hour train which shows beautiful views of nature.

Due to the mountainous nature of the land, the country was very divided except for travel by boat, leaving distinct dialects around the regions as well as varying architecture. Boat tours are a great way to explore the coast, the fjords, and the architecture.

Utepils, a enjoying beer outside in nature, is very Norwegian, as is sharing a Freia  "kvikk lunsj" chocolate bar when you reach the peak of your outdoor hike.

Dugnad, a designated day where everyone helps to participate in cleaning up in your community/neighborhood, is also very Norwegian :)

As for local culture, I am a big fan of the Norske Folkmuseum, where you can "walk through" Norway with models of houses based on geological location in Norway. They also have bunad, or traditional clothing, on show there, based on region. There is also sami (indigenous population) museums and the like that can be explored.
