Sense of humour in Oman

Post new topic

Bhavna

Hello everyone,

Should we set out to explore OmaniÂ’s culture through its sense of humour? Indeed, if one is planning to settle in the country, it is best to understand the cultural codes governing humour in order to avoid any faux-pas.

What is special about the sense of humour in Oman?

Is it acceptable to joke about any situations?

What is typically funny and what is absolutely not funny?

Are there any popular comedians in Oman and how would one be able to discover them (stand-up shows, festivals, internet, etc.)?

What is the funniest joke you have heard in Oman?

Please share your experience,

Bhavna

Hello

The citizen of oman is very obidient and easy to approach for expatriates.
If we talk with them in good manner, they will help us in deed.

When it comes to humour, they will accept in positive way only.
Meanwhile, please make ensure that our humour would not disgreat the government and citizens.

Omanis generally have a good sense of humor and love to laugh. Like other Arabs though, they hate being mocked. The red line is joking about what they hold sacred: God, his prophets, their creed and their parents. Other than that you’ll be fine :-)

Omanis are mostly serious and having limited sense of humor.
The culture and living style are little different as compare to other Arab countries. Jokes and making funny things are not accepted mostly.

The plus point is that the people are helpful, sensible and humble. The more you have respect depends from which geographical area you are coming, for example Asians (some countries people) having less priority than European/Other Arab.

Targeting a national, its culture and/or anything belongs to civil life to make joke is not acceptable at all.

Gathering with friends (more than 10 persons gathering not allowed... [confirmation needed]) and having fun together bring adverse feelings in citizens around.

loud music, showing off using vehicle, short clothes, wearing extras on body etc are mostly not acceptable by the culture/law.

In Summary: In Oman don't bring other attention what you are doing. live , work , travel but keep the things limited to you!

Bhavna ji hi,

Greetings.

See my experience of 6 years may be differ from many/all others but see it may value addition for your survey as I am in touch with all type of Omanis/expats of different countries.

Omanis in the age of above 50's are very sincere & touchy to humans/very personal to Indians & also loving care nature.

Omani's in the young age really sitting in 2 boats they knew they do required expats/specially Indians but they also aware now economy is not supporting to Oman nation so but confused.

My feel govt is divided in 2-3 groups, 33% people are looking for stability of oman, 1/3 are looking for self concern & still 1/3 are looking for growth.  As they understand they dont have any thing so with combined efforts only the way.

They have great sense but only on right track this can goes, but current policies Omanization , NOC banned, zero Business plans divert to them & they are going 20/30 years back if some quick action not taken.

Hi,

Its mixed culture sense of humor, some are friendly you can laugh with them loudly and some are just restricted to their limits.

Mainly its depend on your relationship to whom you are talking, you could might be in trouble if your are making fun without knowing a person personally.

Omanis generally have a gentle sense of humour and very little in the way of sarcasm. At first I thought colleagues' cited reasons not to appear at work were hilarious in their boldness but after some time realised only I found such funny. I don't know much Arabic so don't know how much it happens but many Omanis enjoy puns and creative syntax in English.
