Hi I am looking for a young dog or puppy to grow up with my daughter. Ideally I would like a Rottweiler. If anyone knows of a breeder or has a dog they can't take back home, please let me know.

Hi KT'sMom,
You may post an advert in the Papua New Guinea classifieds > community section - Pets as well.
Hi KT'sMom,
Sorry to not be answering your question but I was interested to read that you are looking to raise a dog in PNG. Is it easy to find places like parks & beaches to walk dogs?
My husband & I may be moving to POM from New Zealand and have a 2-year-old cross-breed that we'd be looking to bring. Do you know whether that's fairly straightforward?
Any advice will be gratefully received! Hope you find a puppy :-)
I wonder how hard it would be to get a dog from Lae to POM? I know a family here had puppies that they were trying to find good homes for.... That was a bit ago, but I know it comes up from time to time.... Hmmm....

It depends on the neighborhood you live in whether it is safe to walk a dog. There are beaches here but generally not many expats expose themselves to the risk at the local beach. You may have to go outside of town a bit to really get a good walk. Most locals are scared of dogs, especially German Shepards and Rottweilers.
From New Zealand/Australia, it seems easier than USA. I had to leave my dogs in the States since it required a 6 months quarantine period (can be done under vet supervision in the USA) and A LOT of paperwork, not to mention a great deal of expense. Best bet is to email. This is what I was told when I looked into it before moving here: please be advised that all imports of live annimals and plants to Papua New Guinea are prohibited imports, unless otherwise prior approval is obtained from the "National Agriculture Quarantine & Inspection Authority (NAQIA)" of Papua New Guinea. We advise that you contact NAQIA to obtain the relevant information relating to your query as they are responsible for executing relevant legislations governing imports of live annimals and plants. The contact address for NAQIA is as follows;
The Director General,
P.O. Box 741, Port Moresby, N.C.D., Papua nNew Guinea.
Phone #: (675) 3112100, (675)3112113 Fax#: (675)3251673 (general), Fax# (675)3259310
Email: naqia@dg.com.pg or pngnaqs@dg.com.pg
I hope this helps!

Just a quick update, I did find a very nice little puppy who we named Milo. Not sure of his breed but he is a cute little thing. We are working on potty training which is a little hit and miss right now but he is trying very hard to do the right thing. I did try the RSPCA but they only had one dog that was available but he was too big for our daughter. Glad to know the RSPCA is having success at placing animals!!!

Hi Kim,
Thanks for all the great advice.
We've finally decided PNG's not for us, partly due to issues moving our dog - but also (among other reasons) because I work from home and am very reliant on fast, stable internet access which it seems can be hard to come by in PNG.
Awesome to hear about Milo - don't worry about the hit & miss toilet training, that's completely normal... In fact you may find you think you've cracked it only to find a week or two later you're making what seems like 'backward progress'! They all get it eventually :-)
Good luck!
Nay
oh just re-read and saw you've had dogs before so you'll have been through it in the past
Hi Nay-
Internet is ok here, not very fast but it starting to get better. We have DSL in the office, 3G aircard (dongel) from Digicel at home, and looking into VSat (which we hear is great). The down is side is expense. VSat is expensive but it is unlimited downloads/uploads. Either way you are paying quite a bit more than what you would pay at home.
Good Luck!
