Married Couple in Kuwait

Post new topic

Hi Everyone,

I just want to ask regarding Kuwait laws governing legal expat couples here in Kuwait.

Me and my wife works for the same company and when we tried to request for liveout approval, the management refused it even after 3 appeals with the reason that it was our company policy. However, I believe that married couples should be exempted from that law since we are legal couple.

I would like to ask if there is anyone here who knows about the rights of legal couples living here?

I believe it's 'haram' for a married couple to live separately and barely see each other. Added to this, my wife cannot go out during weekdays as we only have 8am to 5pm time to see each other during fridays only. So with this kind of rules, it was really hard for us to see each other and spend quality time as husband and wife.

Hope that someone can enlighten me regarding Kuwait laws regarding married couple's rights to live together.

Thank you.

I am not sure I follow? There is absolutely nothing preventing you two to live together as a couple if you are legally married. So your company policy is against the law, but it all depends if this is written in the contract you have signed.

If they are refusing to let you live a normal life together I doubt there is much you can do that would not involve a lot of time and money though. :(

Yep.  You are confusing two things i.e. Kuwait law and your company policy.  As per law, if you are married, you can live together.

But it has no bearing on your company policy.  If I were to guess, your company doesn't give you a housing allowance and provides accommodation.  In that case, the only option you can have is to rent your own place and pay.   The company cannot stop you from doing that but they can terminate you if their policy is that all staff must live in company accommodation.

These things you should have clarified before accepting the job offer.

i think you need to provide more information such as where you work, or at least what field (teacher etc.) if you're worried about privacy.

company law cannot supersede governing law; however, short of you hiring a lawyer and risking your livelihood, they can always choose to boot.
