It´s been more than 9 weeks since the Economic Impact Payment letter was sent to me
from the White House but I have yet to gaze at the check´s imposing grandeur and splendor as it continues to evade me up to the moment.

So I called the IRS at 800-919-9835. I was put on hold under elevator music for 1 1/2 hours! Finally a guy came on line and verified the address on my 2019 1040 form that I filed. He put a trace on the check that he said was sent to Brazil but did not come back.
He later stated that it will take 6 1/2 weeks for the formal result to be mailed back and I have to complete a packet and send it back. I asked if he can change the info to DD as I receive 2 benefit checks from the US govt. He said he can´t change it. I give up!

robal

Texanbrazil

Well, that sucks.
Still have not heard anything

Robal - I wonder how many others are having these issues of receiving or sending through the international postal service. While my local Correios told me that international services had been suspended I do NOT see the USA on their "official" list (info page - - take a link to another page with a link to a pdf).

Does ANYBODY HERE (perhaps our numbers are few) know of any means to send/receive paper documentation via any means? I mean, there are commercial flights. Do commercial flights not carry Correios/USPostal items? I really don't know.

I guess I wonder if the problem is big enough. Does anybody have any idea of how many U.S. citizens are living in Brazil? I understand that there are security issues on having official counts of citizens living abroad BUT I'm simply wondering if there are only hundreds or tens of thousands. If there are a lot of us here it sure would be handy if we could find ways to better manage our needs as a group.

I tried using my federal representative to get my stimulus check redone and deposited into the account listed on all of my recent tax returns BUT also ended up speaking with somebody who had no solution. I know these folks are overburdoned and trying to keep things running as smoothly as possible but as citizens abroad I don't see that there is really anybody concerned with our situation.

Anybody sending/receiving and if so how?

Thx - MattB

One of Trump's less publicized (after all, there are so many) but in the long run potentially more significant blunders was to withdraw the US from the Universal Postal Union last year.  That puts the US outside the global network that gets international mail delivered.

Is that why the Correios is saying that there's no mail service between Brazil and the US?  Hard to tell with the health crisis, but I doubt that anybody on either side has much bandwidth - or incentive - to negotiate a bilateral postal agreement right now.

DHL is still moving documents in and out of here:  if they're down in Campina Grande, I hope that they'll be up soon.

I doubt that mail to and from the US will improve until sometime after January 20, 2021.

Alascana

I recieved the "Letter" last week at the address on my 2018 return here in Brasil, so there is International Mail Service  between the countries, now let's talk staffing in customs here and the states with the #19 and the death blow "Transportation "  I know USA inbound mail usally hits Houston or Atlanta and then distributed to the respected state, at one point Delta had the contract not  sure who has it now, so with the recent cut in inbound / outbound fllights either plane has limited space and some Airlines cut totally during the crisis, yes I know service was bad before and this is the worse....lol....writing about the IRS  and the USPS & Correios what a "Oxymoron"....my last understanding about airline travel was in this order passengers, baggage, cargo ,mail ....so I blame the airlines...lol...there is a reciprocal agreement of Universal Mail and the handling of mails....anybody remember "Par Avion"...it all flys now just a matter of space available..lol...once foreign mail reaches it's destination with the government guys it's a swag on handling and delivery..with the Private Guys consistency and handling..I know the cost is outrageous between Brasil and the USA for Express, yet when it has to be there on time go with the "Other Guys"  I use to Sell Expediated USPS products, good product yet I would have to tell them go with DHL ,FedEx etc if it had to be there on time...most mail outbound leaves SP and with the #19 any given day a office can be closed and mail is "Non-Essential".....I think most inbound is Sao Paulo,my outbound gets hung up there .....

Flights have been Restricted...I am surprise anything is getting in ......

I mailed my taxes back in Feb-March , my 2019 has been recieved and a payment date will be set (lol/kkk)....
I dislike talking to the IRS...duuhhh.....

On the address change there is a Form for that...lol....they verify everything before talking to you and then they can't change a simple address as Joey B would say "Come On Man"

Texanbrazil

MattB
SSA went green and you can only get statements online.
Create an account and log in. You can request a statement via mail, but who knows when it will come.
I use US Global Mail for most all. They do ship via couriers and much safer. I have used FedEx and DHL. They fly in and have a contract delivery service to the smaller cities if you do not have either office.

Alascana

Another $1,200 coming. But I haven´t seen the first one! Guys, the dollar is falling (5.14 a

If Biden wins investors will be doomed as he threatened war against Wall Street. Capital gains and dividends will be taxed at a higher rate and corporate tax to 28%.

ROFLMAO!  I'll take my chances on non-crooked, non-lying, non-crazy, thanks.  I figure it will take at least ten years to repair the damage that's been done in the past four.  :dumbom:

Texanbrazil

Still waiting on 1st also.

Alascana

Both has their demons. Trump as they say is a jerk but he gets things done. I think that getting out of WHO was a mistake but not hustling Germany and other allies to pay more on their NATO obligations. Confronting China on intellectual property theft, their aggressiveness at the south China Sea, commerce, covering up COVID-19, encroachment into Hong Kong etc. and building an alliance against China in my opinion are proper moves. Too bad COVID-19 did a big damage to the economy.

So you think Biden is non-crooked, non-lying, non-crazy? Don´t forget to add non-bigot, non-womanizer with a teenage cognition.

With his attack on Wall Street, there will be flight of capital as managers look for greener pastures and American companies going to India etc. and not returning to the
US. Those 2 stimulate job growth. So the result would be higher taxes overall to compensate. With equities down, investors would be hesitant to invest. Analysts are already saying, there will be negative income at Wall Street for the next 10 years.  :top:
I could add more but enough already. I hope the moderator doesn´t mind. :D

Not sure it is time to celebrate yet BUT Correios DID take my mail items (trying to deposit paper checks in U.S. bank) this last week. Originally they had suspended service to the USA but are now apparently delivering Sedex to the USA.

We'll see!!

The easy way is to get  a US Check is use a mail service I have Traveling Mailbox. Where it’s your IRS address. They  will scan everything and you can look at it on line. They also did my check and I was able to deposit it through my bank app with a photo and Robo sign app. I put it on my computer and then did the photo for the bank in the US. Hope this helps

Alascana

I have not received anymore instructions regarding my first stimulus payment, so I visited the IRS site at "Get My Payment." Alas, the check is to be mailed to me (the second time) tomorrow, 21Aug2020 and the IRS provided a direct deposit space to fill in my bank info for receiving future payments or benefits. I hope they include this one already... Tex, you also should check it out. They need your adjusted gross income from your 2018 tax return and any refund or amount you owe from the same 2018 1040form.

robal

Texanbrazil

Doc, I go to the site 3 times a week. Just get "not available".
Can' even call them.........

mberigan

Robal - Thank you for that last bit on "Get My Payment" because previously I was not able to register my bank info. This time I was and I did.

I don't know if there are any other stimulus things headed this way but at least I shouldn't have to do pirouettes to get something deposited.

I'm STILL haven't seen what I sent last Friday via Sedex get to my bank for deposit and the marvelous tracking only states: Objeto encaminhado para ESTADOS UNIDOS DA AMERICA" ... and I don't imagine they track beyond that. BUT it did leave my city, go through Recife and get to São Paulo before this final message.

Macae

Out of curiosity, why did you not use FedEx or DHL?  They both have a great tracking system based my use of them several times.  Definitely, for importing into Brasil to Rio de Janeiro, I strongly suggest to use DHL.  When there is an issue with Customs, you can go to the airport commercial area and talk directly to the Brazilian Customs agent.  I have had some items imported that went to Sao Paulo/Campinas, and it took months and months to clear the Brazilian Customs.  Just my two (2) cents on a Friday afternoon.

TGIF

Have a wonderful day!

mberigan

DHL closed up shop here when Covid hit. FEDEX doesn't really exist here. They say that they do BUT they use a secondary provider that basically doesn't know how to do things. I"ve had bad experiences. I"m not alone.

Wonder if they take skype calls?

You´re supposed to call them if you haven´t received the stimulus check after 9 weeks per IRS instruction. I used Skype at their toll-free number 1-800-919-9835. You´ll be put on hold under the
boring elevator music for approx 1 1/2 hour. But calling them tips them off for proper and prompt measures. Good luck with them boring guys!

You bet!

There´s another check coming and it´s being debated upon in Congress. Stay tuned. I don´t believe
Correios track items once it´s out of the country. USPS is the same way.

I used the Brave browser with my Nord VPN on, used capital letters, no state or country - ONLY the street address and put all ZIP code nos. even if they asked for only 5 numbers. No commas or hyphens...

My last call they said it takes 6 1/2 weeks for any result like tracing the check and all and they´ll send me a packet of forms to fill up and I have to send it back. After 5 weeks, 2 days for some reason, I was uneasy of the situation and checked "Get My Payment." And there it was, the check to be mailed the following day. I should have checked earlier - a week earlier. AT LEAST! And they gave the opportunity
to give my DD info. It pays to be vigilant with these guys.

mberigan

Regarding Sedex tracking of mailed objects to the USA, an item I sent on 8/14 was tracked all of the way to the final destination with regular updates along the way. I was pretty sure that tracking stopped at the border and was proved wrong. The updates weren't hugely informative giving unnamed distribution center notifications (so I couldn't actually tell what cities it was hitting) BUT it did notify me that it had been dropped at the final destination - and sure enough it had been.

So - lesson = Sedex works fine!
MattB

Alascana

To the best of my knowledge both USA and Brasil "Correrio/USPS...Do Not track beyond the border or tendered by the Receiving Country, maybe USPS Express and Priority services " Certified/Registered...The 'Other Expedited ' service providers should be Tracking..if its "Important" use Sedex....I know these things..lol
