@Jack Keyman The whole **** tax system is not explained to you before moving toi Portugal. *** In theory under portuguese law if you buy a house under a certain price you have three years free IMI rates tax on your house. In reality Finanas do not obey the law and will insiste you pay as they did with me. Don't forget that there is permanent road tax on your car even if it is off the road being repaired -- there is no way out of it like delaring it off the road in advance like in most countries. Also, often when you sell a car and report the sale to the stupid inefficient staff at IMT, it often does not come off the Finanas computer system. They were trying to charge me road tax and fines for not paying the road tax for a car I had sold to someone in Scotland two years prior. I refused to pay all on the advice of a solicitor and had proof of Financas mistake and they said they would take me to court in a bullying manner. I was willing to go to court as I knew I would win. However, in the end, when I went to sell my house the Financas stopped me selling the house until I paid all in full even though I did not owe then one cent. I have a court ase pending against the dishonest Financas.

@Hairyhippy,

Corrupt tax system? Your post is not only inappropriate but also reveals wrong and distorted information.

You are wrong in your complaints. There's no point in commenting or wasting time on this...

Exemption from IMI: there are rules and conditions for requesting exemption from this tax:

IUC tax for cars

This tax is always payable, even if your car sits in the garage all year ... if you don't use it and you don't want to pay this tax, you have to sell your car or scrap it... just that ...
