Hi everybody.

55 year old man from Norway here looking to relocate to Budapest. I first visited Budapest in 1987 and stayed in an old school teacher's apartment in district XIII, I guess you can say my love story started then.  I've been back several times over the years and now I feel I am ready for a move. Knowing the language is something of a barrier to cross, I am obviously worried about being "outside-looking-in" in society, so finding other in similar situation as me is obviously interesting for me to cushion the impact. I am sure you know what I mean. I have relocated many times in my life already, but perhaps never to a country so introvert as Hungary - I say that well aware that I might be completely out-of-line here, please correct me if you think I am, I will be the wiser, no offense intended from my part. With kind regards /Pal

Hello everyone, I've been reading for a while here every now and then, but never registered. I've been living in Budapest for four years now with my partner and daughter. We came here for his job as at the time, it was the best option we had. Honestly, we never really felt "at home" here, and have always longed back for Spain where we lived before this phase in our lives. Currently, we're working towards moving back there next year.

When exactly isn't sure yet, as I'm pregnant and this gives some extra things to think about, what's best for me and the baby and our other child regarding kindergarten etc. I've never been able to make a true effort learning the language as this has always been a pit stop for both of us, only the stop took a bit longer than we expected.  My partner worked in an international environment and I work remotely so the need to socialize in Hungarian wasn't really there. Add to that the pandemic situation where life has changed even more, and it became an even lesser need as many things were done online.

I've been struggling with some things that keep me awake lately and would like to seek advice maybe from others that walked the same path here. It has to do with health care around my pregnancy. So I signed up to see if I can find some answers.

As you are English, you have a few more hurdles to go through due to Brexit. In order to stay in Hungary past the year, you will need to register because you will be working illegally.

Mrs F and I had two kids here but it was quite a while ago (last one 12 years ago).

Maybe just post your questions.

Someone else was pregnant and asking some questions earlier on but I don't recall the name of the thread.

Hello Everyone,

Hope everyone is doing well. I’ve been looking into moving abroad and living there. Having been in US for pretty much all my life, I discovered this site by searching how do expats live abroad, how do they get their US driver’s license renewed, or get one abroad according to their respective destination countries, and just how living is abroad. Is finding employment easy, or relatively difficult? How is the language transition? Difficult? Or everyone you run into speaks some English to make communication somewhat easy. I have been taking some Hungarian but being fluent will take a while. A very long while.

About me: As I mentioned have been living in States for all my life. I have traveled to different countries and variants US states and cities. I love outdoors, hiking, biking, I love and enjoy various types of wine and craft beers. I work in the wine industry. I also love all different types of cuisines. I love spicy foods! Recent addiction— Spicy Miso Ramen!

Looking forward to connecting with you all on here and learning more about your experiences living abroad. Thanks for your time!

Welcome to the forum.
Coming and living in Hungary is a whole new world, more so if you do not know the language or culture. Nothing can not be "learnt, but be patient.
What and why you decide on Hungary, without seeming intrusive to ask?

Thank you! Nice to meet you. No, not intrusive at all. That’s a good question actually. I always thought of living abroad, but that thought has turned into an obsession as of late. From reading various articles about Budapest and watching countless YT videos on how living is here, how inexpensive it is compared to other European destinations. I decided this would can work. I’m hopeful that it will. Also being centrally located, one can visit other European countries, which I always wanted to. How long have you been living there? What made you decide to move here? How are you liking living there? Thank you for the reply.

Hi Furnitureman..
There are numerous private Medical Clinics throughout Budapest. I speak from experience using First Med Center, near Mammut Shopping Center. It is actually run by an American, and you can expect to receive superior service. I used them for a visit there over the past summer. Kind, friendly, courteous, and they all speak perfect English.
Hope this helps.
