We shipped our car following the same procedure outlined in this blog:
It took about 6 weeks to arrive, but was pretty painless for the most part. I was first in line for pickup and was able to drive the car out in just under an hour.
Is it possible to get around - do they hv public transportation in, let's say, San Juan? Seeing what it costs just for SURI tax blows my mind! I can't spend that kind of money - I can live quite frugally - I've had my "dream house," 6000 Sq ft homes, etc. Now I just want peace! Do you suggest a realtor for rentals or should I stay away from them? How else do u find an apt?
My hopes are sinking fast🥺
Thank you
SZ… I’m afraid I cannot give you much information on living in San Juan. I think if you live near the old town and Condado you will be able to walk to the beach, shops and restaurants. You probably wouldn’t want a car in that area.
Have you been using the Classifideos? Their classifieds, it lists more properties than any broker.
This is a beautiful Island…. If it takes some time and work to get the right place, I think you will find it worth it.
Nuyorican living in NH, but has always wanted to moved to PR. My dad tried it but lived on the west coast in Aguada and had a bit of a hard time. However, that has not deterred me one bit from wanting to try it myself. My family hails from the west side; Camuy, Isabella, Lares, Rio Piedras, etc. But, it would just be me and my kids. Perhaps after finishing my studies I will do just that. Si Dios permite <3
Hi this is Erika, I'm wanted to ask how your Senior is "taking" the news. We have a Jr /17 year old th at DOES Not want to make a move. Love to hear if you have any ideas.
WE are also looking for family friendly areas, from others that are making the move and we have (2) dogs we are looking to move as well, but understand it's hard to find ANY airlines to send from West to East Coast. Any luck?
Hi there! My wife and I are very well experienced innkeepers and have an amazing opportunity to bring our skills to a small operation in the southwest of the island. We don't have any kids and 2 pets. I'm really just reaching out to get some opinions on the pros and cons of moving from the states to PR. Thinks like, how expensive was it to move? How easy or not life is on the island? Any preconceived notions that might be skewed or untrue? Etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks ðŸ‘
We moved here in August after vacationing for several weeks here a few times for years, my husband is retired from USPS with pension & insurance. We used La Rosa Del Monte and I can’t recommend them they delivered the last boxes 5 months later and took 5 weeks over the quoted 2-5 weeks to arrive. We switched health insurance from BCBS to the PR version of it called Triple S and it’s much cheaper. Doctors appts here take forever to get sometimes the waits are 2-4 months. The hospitals here don’t provide basics like sheets, pillows, blankets, gowns or welcome kits with toiletries and are freezing cold. I’m told San Juan hospitals are better but have not been to one yet. Most of the stores in US have some press ends here on the island. We are looking for a rental place and have not had much response from clasificados ads when we ask for more info. We are also going thru a hard time getting electricity hooked up where we are now with the changes in LUMA. We love living here but it’s not the easiest place to wade thru the systems.
Hi! New to this forum. Joined it to learn more about living in PR. Nearing retirement age and looking to sell our vacation condo on the NE side of the island and look for a house in a gated community. Preferred new build which limits us as there aren't that many being built at a reasonable price.Â
Hopefully, I'll learn some tips and things to avoid. Along with areas to relocate to.
I don’t think there is a lot of new construction in PR. I am in Palmas Del Mar on the east side. There are some new buildings coming on the market but, not many.
Here, we have large multi- million dollars homes with amazing views, down to nice condos that now start for about $275-$400k depending on the “regime†and the view, a regime is one of the small communities that make up the larger. Palmas is gated and most of the communities in Palmas are also gated. Yes, gated communities within a gated community. It is a very safe place.
Thanks for accepting me. I live in New Jersey almost all my life. My house is under contract and closing is scheduled for October 18. Very excited to move to my birth town of Isabela where I bought a house 4 years ago.
hello everyone; brand new here so glad to be part of this forum. just started thinking of puerto rico. too many issues with moving to mexico. we are 68 and 69 (very young) we like to host bbq's, jetski, ride our 4 wheelers and garden. any ideas where we should live for a house value of $150k or less?
I’ll give one thought. The southeast coast from Humacao to Lamboglia. Especially from Yabacoa south. Look at the Punta Tuna area.
There are mountains with unbelievable ocean vistas and beautiful beaches. Humacao has 3 hospitals and Costco is in Caguas from 30-60 minutes away depending on where you are. I suggest looking at google maps and following road 901 then 3 down to Lamboglia. Just click on a few of the restaurants on 901. The will have unbelievable photos of the mountains and sea, BTW, I bought a wonderful empanada yesterday for $3 sat and ate it with million dollar views.
I think you can find property in your price range.
Hi Everyone,
My wife and I are planning to move to Puerto Rico in January of 2021. We have shortlisted Condado and Dorado as possible places to live. We would like to start out by renting a condo. If anyone has lived in either of these places, please share your experience.
We currently live in Los Angeles area.

Hello:
My wife and I are retired educational administrators (PK-12 and University) with four grown children. We have a consulting practice that would allow for part-time living in Puerto Rico for 5-6 years, prior to a permanent move.
We are attempting to understand the various communities of Puerto Rico and to find a place to live where we can connect with other individuals who are physically-active and also enjoy find arts productions and presentations.
Thank you for your feedback.
Have you considered Palmas Del Mar, Humacao? In my opinion Condado is over priced and the nice beach areas are taken by the big hotels. Dorado has grown too fast. In my opinion too congested for its size.
Hello! My name is Jennifer! I moved to PR for work last year. I'm currently renting in Barceloneta, but I purchased some land near Mar Chiquita in Manatà and I'm interested in building a house there. I look forward to meeting everyone here.
I’d love to connect with you. My husband and I have two children 3 years and 7 months old. We are looking to move somewhere high end, within 20 mins of great private schools, in a community where people are family friendly and active. Does anyone have any recommendations?
We are currently living in Washington DC
Hi everybody.
French living in Florida(PR 0650).speaking Spanish too (Queens/NYC and Dominican Republic last 7 years)
Arrived in may to do US citizenship.
I got it.
I would like to stay here
Julian, thank you for the thread! My husband and I are looking forward to living in Puerto Rico part time away from our home in Minnesota. We purchased a gorgeous lot near the beach in Cabo Rojo. Finding a way to get a home built however has certainly been a challenge. We are currently scouting the modular home market and making notes.Â
We'd love to start building yet in 2021, but not sure if that's going to be a reality although we are willing and able! We love the island life and are excited about living in Cabo Rojo...when we have a roof! Â
Anyone here in the Hacienda Belvedere area? We'd love to get to know you
~Susanna and Ilya
My question is. How much would it cost more or less to have a raised deck on my how is P R it has to have concrete stilts  Than it would be about 15x10 floor space
Hello All,
We are starting to investigate beach living and looking for the right place. I'm not sure, but PR may be a great option. We are looking for; 1) beach front, 2) economical rental, 3) access to decent health care, 4) expat friendly, 5) easy to travel back and forth to US, 6) close to a community/town that we can participate with, preferably a smaller community. We are mid-50s with a 10 year old son. I work from home. We'd like to be able to spend a year and decide if it is the right life for us. Suggestions? Resources to help us find the right place?
Watch the videos Jen has she covers your questions in multiple videos. She’s been here 5 years living in Palmas Del Mar in Humacao & now in Cabo Rojo. Her YouTube channel is Jentheredonethat. Even though I’ve been coming here with my husband twice a year for over 15 years there’s so much I wasn’t aware of until I watched people talk on YouTube. We moved here full time in August 2020 & are living in Humacao.
Thank you so much for the "Jentheredonethat" info. We watched her videos and feel so good about our decision to buy in Cabo Rojo. In fact, our property is exactly where she filmed her Cabo Rojo video ...on Playa Ostiones.  We have been working with an architect to build our house on our property at the beach and it's be frustrating to say the least. BUT, where there is a will there is a way!
Yes I hear construction is a nightmare. Plus the time it’s taking for shipping anything in, I’ve heard the ships usually have a couple stops among different islands and bypass PR if the wait is too long. The price of a container has almost quadrupled since the start of the pandemic. Hopefully you can find everything you need on the island to build your dream home.
Greetings! My family of 5 just relocated to Puerto Rico about a month and a half ago, and it has been amazing! The people, the views, the food, the new experiences, all have been worth the small aggregations we encountered. We never want to leave!! We started out in the west (Quebradillas, Aguadilla, Isabela) and found our way from the coast to Comerio! We love it so much! Met an amazing woman that’s letting us renovate her property when she learned of our troubles in finding a rental, we couldn’t have been luckier! If ANYONE has any questions, concerns, if you need a certified auto mechanic, help with shopping for a car or place, please let us know! We’ve also started a YouTube channel to show everyone how easy and fun it is to be an expat, as well as some of the surprises along the way! Can’t wait to get to know you all!

Welcome and good luck what is the YouTube channel?
Bueno! I am Sarah. My family and I are living in Georgia and entertaining the thought of moving to PR sometime in the next year. We have visited PR several times, twice with the children and it's one of our favorite places to visit. We have stayed in Rincon, Aquadilla, Isabela, and Utuado and love it all!
Our kids are 14 and 16 and do not speak Spanish but are learning. I speak very limited Spanish - very very limited, but I can get around. My husband is a lineman for our Power Company here with 25 years of experience and I am a financial paraplanner. I don't believe we would have trouble finding jobs as mine can be remote and he has a very specialized trade. We have enough saved in our retirement accounts to live simply in retirement and are tired of the rat race. Our concern, of course like everyone else it seems on here, is the kids.
We are looking for a change in lifestyle and to live more simply. Learning a second language is always a plus for anyone - but what do we do for college? Do you send your kids to the states? We are not that far off from that phase in our lives.
When my husband and I casually mentioned the thought of moving to PR, both of our kids without pause said, "YES!"
It is frightening and exciting to think that this is something that is totally do-able! We have a lot of equity in our home here and with the housing market in our area, could do very well selling our property.
Thanks for reading!
Sarah
