Hello group. Starting my journey to Vietnam-Da Nang

Post new topic

Jimpdxusa

I am in the early stages of making the leap from Portland, Oregon USA to Da Nang.  I am 57, have done a ton of research, read countless articles, talked to my financial advisor and so on.  I am ready.

Yet I still have many questions and figured I would join this group to learn from you all and read the past Q&A.

My first question is kind of silly actually.  When I look at the various online groups or social media and look at the restaurant/bar/pub photos, and look at events group photos it seems like it is all the younger crowed or digital nomad scene.  As a 57 year old fella, is there events/places to mingle with folks more in my own age group?  If you go to a pub or go listen to music, will I be "that old guy"?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jim. You can find out more at city specific expat sites. You will be a young whippersnapper so no problem there.  You will like Da Nang weather if you like Portland weather. It can get chilly and rainy for a few months in the winter

Jimpdxusa

Gary, thank reply is greatly appreciated.  And thanks for the tip on city specific sites, I will check it out straight away.

Don’t worry, Da Nang is like the day room of an assisted living facility. Geezers like me, from Seattle, all over the place.

That is funny stuff Tom. 😂

57?  You have me by three years.  Give it a year and you will be married to a 20-something like the rest of us!  But, I'm going the opposite way.  We are heading to the US in two weeks.

I'm going to work another 4, let her daughter graduate from a US high school, they will get their citizenship and then I'll retire.  We will be moving around too much to risk it on a green card.

Jimpdxusa

Mmmm possible for sure.  Or smitten by some Aussie.  Have to love the accent.  I have always been attracted to women my age or older.  But not limiting myself to anything, completely open minded. But that’s not the primary goal.  Explore the culture, region, adventure and of course a good quality of life is.

So looking forward to making the jump.

The only reason locals even care about your age is how to address you, 99% of the locals will happily chat away the hours with you what ever your age.
Lift your glass to any local in a bar and 5 mins later you will be part of their group.
I have to say It's one the friendliest places I've ever lived.

Andy I owe you a beer mate!

Just to confirm what others have mentioned, if you are in your 50s, you will on average be one of the younger people. The vast majority of expats in VN are retirees/pensioners who enjoy the weather and low cost of living. I think the country's a bit too boring for most younger people.

As for online photos, you probably see more young people in them because it's just something they do more often than older people, who rarely think of pulling out their phone and getting everybody together for a few shots to post on social media.

Good point I'm 62 she is 35, I dont have twitter, instagram, facebook, she has them all and uses them 50 times a day hence you will never see me posting selfies etc.
So maybe older people just dont do the "look at me i'm having a beer" type photo's.

If she uses them 50 times a day, you'll be in one of the photos she posts.  The accompanied text will not be "Look at me, I'm having a beer", but probably will be in her words: "Spending time with my sweetheart."
