Air Conditioner

Post new topic

And it's not an air conditioner and inverter. It's an inverter style air conditioner which means energy efficient.  What is the efficiency rating or SEER?  Price will depend on this number and brand plays a part as well

TGM Brand 18000 BTW SEER 21 of 26 with installation cost arround 36,000.00,  I think 42,000 its expensive too.

Hi who do you use to buy your split system in Terrenas, would you be able to give as an average price on total you spend in the split units plus installation? and was the company in Terrenas and the installer? We are at that point where we need to buy AC ASAP, the new apt is ready.

Thank you

ddmcghee

@Adalharis Our builder took care of buying the AC units and having them installed, so I don't have costs for just that as it was part of our overall construction. I'm surprised AC wasn't included in your new construction. Was the electrical placed for the unit? If not, you'll need to ensure you find someone who can do that for you as part of installation.

Here in town, there are a number of places that have ACs - Acosta, EMB, Commercial de Leon, and then I think there are a few stores that specialize in ACs. I'm sure the prices here are higher than in Santo Domingo, but it will better to have someone local responsible for the installation in case you need any warranty work done.

I need the same info as Adalharris.  We need to buy some ACs asap in Santiago, and are total unfamiliar with how to evaluate the AC needs of the different rooms and how to select an AC.

Refripartes has locations across the country. Take the room measurements and visit one of their locations. They carry a variety of brands.

Aircon Repair

When it comes to ductless air conditioners, there are a few reliable brands that offer a good balance of price and performance. Since you're on a budget, I'd recommend looking into Midea and Gree—both brands are known for being affordable while still providing decent cooling and efficiency. For something a bit more high-end but still reasonably priced, LG and Daikin offer solid options as well. They might cost a little more upfront, but they tend to last longer and can be more energy-efficient, which could save you money on your energy bills. For your setup—two small units for the bedrooms and a larger one for the living room—these brands should have options that fit your needs without breaking the bank. Just be sure to check for deals or discounts, especially if you're buying multiple units.

I've never seen Midea or Gree units here in DR. Who sells them here? If not readily available here, servicing and parts might be an issue.

We have a Midea dehumidifier we use in the room that houses our solar, but we shipped that in from the US.

Rule 1

Ask how quiet the units are. Some of the cheaper things are very noisy.

Rule two.

Buy a commonly available brand so you can get any local engineer (Installer) rather than only someone from that shop. Parts aren't likely to be needed as units are very reliable. I have four, the oldest being 15 years old, and never had any actual repair issues, just maintainence.

Rule three

Keep the refrigerant pipes to the outside unit and condensation waste water pipes as short and accessible as possible.

Every time I've had real problems with AC, it's always been the two points above. The latter is a serious pain and can cause a lot of damage.

When possible, fit to an outside wall. The people who designed our house set up long pipes and they are a problem for everyone, so everyone refitted to outside walls.

If you're new to AC, take the air filters out every week or two and give them a wash. Depending on how dusty your area is, you'll have to get an engineer (Sorry, installer) in to give them a serious cleaning every so often.

You'll know when because they don't work well when they are too dirty.

They may need re-gassing from time to time, but that's less common if the unit was well fitted.

I also have a portable unit I can move around easily. It requires a wide pipe to get rid of the hot air and a thin waste water pipe. It is far from quiet but I used it in a bedroom when we first moved in, and again when the AC failed due to a rubbish installation job. The noise wasn't much of a problem.

I bought it for an office as I knew I would be moving in a couple of months.

Portables are easy to fit, but they tend to be inefficient so cost more to run.

@ddmcghee  Gree is Lennox rebranded for Latin America, and very common and reliable.  Midea is a very low quality brand, but very cheap.  For split units, KTC, Gree, Panasonic and Daikin are all good brands.  Check the SEER rating, the higher the better.  For a 12,000BTU unit, over 19 is good. For a 18,000 or 24,000 BTU unit, over 21 is good.  Samsung makes good units, but the high price does not  get you anything special.
