What struck you about the United Arab Emirates?

Post new topic

Cheryl

Hello everybody,

When you first settled in the United Arab Emirates, you might have been struck by cultural aspects of life in the United Arab Emirates and you might even have anecdotes about your integration here.
We would like you to share with expats-to-be what you discovered once you arrived in the United Arab Emirates: customs, traditions, interesting or fun facts etc.

What were the things that surprised you the most after your arrival?

Are there any practices that are particularly out of step with your culture of origin? If so, what are they?

What do you think about them?

Did you get used to these and adopt some of these traditions or norms?

Do you think you would take some of the customs of the United Arab Emirates with you if you were to return to your home country or move to another country?

Thank you!

Cheryl,

Internet / wifi five times the cost of UK a cartel of only 2 providers and vastly overcharged mobile phone rates.
Parking meters being introduced everywhere even where obviously not needed within infrastructure which cannot possibly be cost effective, and almost no public transport alternative to cars outside Central city areas. Meaning you have to use a car but cannot stop anywhere without being harassed and fined by an army of wardens.
Housing rents the same or higher than London.
Dangerous drivers who drive everywhere at or above the  speed limit flashing and tailgating as though attending an emergency.
Food costs higher than UK.

Plus points:
Safe environment and good police force.
Well run local municipality service.
Good hospital services.
Great weather between November and April.

Conclusion:  the Country is run for the benefit of local monopolistic providers at the expense of Expats. The parking meter obsession looks like a misguided German control-freak import.... designed to make everyone's life stupidly and unnecessarily more complicated.

Hi Cheryl,

Normally before, I relocate  or travel to any country, what i do is:

1. I Check the the customs requirements and culture, do's and don'ts to the country in going to.
2. Safety and Security
3. Availability of public transport and utilities
4. Cost of living

Regards,

Olly.
