London to Amsterdam - can i work remotely ?

Post new topic

I am currently living in London and also currently working for a company based in London that has a 100% remote policy, meaning I can travel around as long as my working hours are not affected too much.

Is it possible to move to Amsterdam for 3 months and work there remotely for my London based company? I researched and it say's because I am from the UK I will not need a visa but can only travel here without one for 90 days.

Any advice on if it is possible please? Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

To be frank - what you're proposing is a mess, nobody gave it any consideration before Brexit and not much has been done since.  Officially, even though you might be working from a laptop in an Airbnb and nobody will know you are doing it; it's when you're lying in a hospital bed with no Dutch medical insurance that you will wish that you hadn't done it.

My advice is that you contact the Dutch Immigration people and ask them what they think; they have a website with contact details, this will take you straight there.

Hi Cynic,

Thank you for taking the time out to respond - really appreciated!

Ok sounds better to apply for the visa then, I just didn’t know if i was allowed to work remotely in Amsterdam or not even though I can travel freely for 90 days without a visa.

Do you know if I can live in Amsterdam yet work for a uk company remotely is possible even if I do get a visa? I’ve seen some stuff online that says to work in Amsterdam you need to work for a Dutch company. Apologies if this sounds stupid, I’ve never considered relocating until now so am a little uneducated on the rules/regulations.

Many Thanks,
Mica

Hi again.

There is a thing called the Schengen Zone that may help you; this Zone is an EU inspired idea to simplify travel within the EU and to open it up to non-EU countries on a reciprocal basis.  The UK never joined Schengen while it was in the EU, but that doesn't stop you from using it today.   This () will take you straight to the relevant website.  You'll see on this website in the "who needs a schengen visa" section that it tells you that Citizens of the UK "don't need a Schengen Visa to enter Europe"; so, the Netherlands are a Schengen country, what all this means is you can go there for u to 90 days without any visa at all, that is until ETIAS is introduced in the EU which is going to happen by the end of this year; there is a section in the link above that talks about ETIAS, I'd advise you to read it.

So, you can live and work in the Netherlands for up to 90 days, you will need to consider how you'll manage your affairs from afar, things like Medical Insurance spring to mind. Anything beyond the 90 days, then you will need the MVV visa from the IND - MVV is a long-term joint residence and work permit.

You also need to talk to your employer about this. Generally there's tax issues involved when working in a different country, so your best bet would be to talk to your employer and ask if they are okay with you working remotely for a period of time. It's not just worrying about health insurance, which is an obstacle that you could overcome (travel insurance, etc) but also the company could get in trouble for having workers working in another country without paying taxes to that country.
