Ukraine Invasion and Impacts on DR

In January, DR received record arrivals.
Most came from USA (123k), but in second place by some margin was Russia (50k) which was well ahead of Canada (28k) and Germany (18k). Interestingly Ukraine accounted for 14k arrivals.
Clearly DR benefits significantly from tourism from Russia and Ukraine.
With worldwide sanctions placed and about to be placed on Russia and a ruble at rock bottom with credit card restrictions and Ukraine's airspace closed, a reliance on Airbus and Boeing passenger aircraft, these tourism numbers will plummet.
DR will be impacted and the foreign nationals from those countries residing here too, as well as Dominican students abroad in those countries and nearby.
Think of the Ukranians who are currently here on vacation not knowing of family back home nor how and when they can return home.
And worse, foreign buyers of Russian oil and gas are finding themselves unable to get letters of credit today so oil and gas prices will rise even more and impact DR in many ways. Add the likely increase in cereal prices and DR will be noticeably effected by this unexpected European aggression and a major continental war which our generations have not experienced before, having grown used to more peaceful times.
The President is due to hold a crisis meeting to review the impacts on DR this afternoon and nothing looks good and he will have to adjust planned anti inflation measures for his speech on 27th.
Its going to impact us all.  Today I filled up my vehicle, you can all expect all combustibles to go up tomorrow night!
I read that a lot of the investment by Russians is on the North Coast and Sosua where there is an orthodix church and school. The owners of Sosua Ocean Village are I believe Russian.
Gazprom has been planning investment and oil and gas exploration in DR and agricultural exports from DR to Russia are growing.
Lots of potential impacts for DR on personnal and business levels apparently.
The sanctions announced today would probably make it difficult for Russian airlines to be able to pay for refueling for the return journey in DR unless pilots arrive with a wedge of dollars. So maybe no need to follow the UK and ban Russian flights. And Azul Air the Ukranian charter airline will probably not be flying for a while.
More food, transport and building cost increases coming for DR.....
Presidential Spokesperson: Conflict between Russia and Ukraine will exacerbate international price crisis
The spokesman and director of Government Strategy and Communication, Homero Figueroa declared this Thursday that the Dominican government is working on the necessary measures to reduce the impact that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine will have on the local economy.
Through an official statement, Figueroa indicated that this is a moment that once again calls for the unity of the entire country.
“That is why we ask political actors to exercise responsibility in handling the issue of prices; to the productive sectors to share the sacrifices; and to citizens, to trust that their authorities will do everything necessary to guarantee the least possible disturbance in everyone's life. As always in the past, we will overcome this challenge and come out strongerâ€, he explained.
He specified that every global event is also local and that the post-pandemic international inflation that affects us will now be more intense and lasting due to this conflict.
He considered that the Dominican Republic cannot feel distant or alien, since we are a net importer of oil, natural gas, soybeans, sorghum, wheat and corn that will reflect immediate price increases.
"Furthermore, we import 36.5% of the iron and molten steel that we consume from Ukraine," Figueroa reported.
He explained that Russia began a military operation against Ukraine and that the Ukrainian government has asked the international community for help; and Western powers have reported that they will respond decisively to hold Russia accountable for military action that will cause much human suffering.
"The harsh statements from all sides portend a possible conflict that could be on a large scale," he said.
I just got off the phone with a friend and he said that the pesos to the dollar valuation has dropped

The position of the Dominican Republic is clear:
Abinader makes a "strong call" to Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine
The head of state said that Putin does not respect the political identity of the people of Ukraine
The President of the Republic, Luis Abinader , asked Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine , since this aggression "violates the basic norm of peaceful coexistence among nations, putting all humanity on edge."
The head of state posted a statement on his social networks, in which he states that "the Dominican Republic is shaken by the military invasion perpetrated by Russia against the people of Ukraine."
"This action is a sign that President Putin does not respect the political, cultural and territorial identity of the Ukrainian people, by violating its internationally known borders and intervening in the internal affairs of that country, in clear violation of international law," he said. head of state.
The president recalled that 76 years ago, the nations of the world committed themselves in the Charter of the United Nations to "preserve future generations from the scourge of war ."
But he indicated: "Today, Russia has ignored that historic and solemn commitment assumed by the entire international community."
In this sense, Abinader called for Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine "and to return to the negotiating table, in order to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict."
"Humanity deserves and expects peace, world leadership has an obligation to work for it," said the president.

That reflects the strength of the Dominican economc management since this government took over. And that is a positive for DR when buying goods from abroad but less so for visitors.
Currencies and commodity prices will be very volatile in the coming days and weeks.
President Abinader is expected to announce measures to help ordinary citizens in DR to ease the burden of inflationary costs this Sunday which is Independence Day.
I disagree on the currency fluctuation. In my opinion this is directly linked to world wide issues. Hopefully this war is short lived and we get stability back!
Off topic, but have a look at this graph showing how the Dominican Peso has performed since the Abinader government was elected in May 2020....stable after a long steep decline and now very recently increasing in value.
Remarkable because of the pandemic and inflation. And during that time the US Dollar value has increased against a basket of major currencies and the credit ratings for DR have risen to BB, Ba3 or BB- with stable outlook depending which of the agencies you refer.
But the Russian invasion of Ukraine could change all that because DR is going to be badly impacted - but many other countries too.
We move on from Covid pandemic to Russian aggression crisis.......bad for DR, bad for everyone in the free world and especially independent nations.
Yes it's currently down 2 points!Â
Lennox I am looking at the trend over last 3 months. It's the last month or less where the big move backwards is happening.Â
This is on topic if we are looking at potential damage from this invasion.
Putin puts Russia's strategic nuclear force on 'special alert'
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the Russian military to put its nuclear forces on "special alert" - the highest level of alert for Russia's Strategic Missile Forces.
Speaking to top military officials, including Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, he said Western nations had taken "unfriendly actions" towards Russia and imposed "illegitimate sanctions".
We'll bring you an assessment of this move shortly.
This man is a danger to all of the free world wherever we live.
He obviously is agitated now that Russian banks will not be part of SWIFT and Russian Central bank funds are frozen with both likely to affect average Russians banking and future Russian tourism to DR. To add, European airspace being closed off to Russian aircraft - Italy was the latest today and so it is a long diversionary haul for any flights to head here now. And of course he will have been surprised that Ukranians are not welcoming him but rather fighting very hard and inflicting large Russian casualties - apparently 4,500 dead soldiers and that would be over 10% of the forces reportedly in Ukraine right now.
Looks like Russian aircaraft won't be coming to DR soon.......
Ukraine invasion: Russian planes face near-total airspace ban to west
Published11 minutes ago
Apparently Finland is about to close it's airspace off to Russina aircraft as is France, Holland and Belgium.
It is going to tough for the Russians on holiday here to get home with a potentially very long and expensive detour assuming Turkey does not also ban flights.
They warn a hard blow to tourism in the DR due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict
The economist and business consultant, Henri Hebrard , projected that Russia 's invasion of Ukraine will bring very negative consequences for tourism, the economy and the budgetary stability of the Dominican Republic .
He explained that tourism will be hit hard since in 2021 the two countries together contributed 269,612 tourists to the country. In January of this year 2022, 49,215 arrived from Russia and 13,749 from Ukraine, for a total of 332,576 travelers from these destinations in 13 months.
He indicated that "if the economic sanctions of the United States and Europe against Russia are very extreme, this could affect Russian tourism to the Dominican Republic, which is the main destination from these countries."
He declared that from Ukraine, 15,000 tourists arrive monthly and it is the fifth most important country for the DR from Europe, above Italy and the United Kingdom and only surpassed by Russia, Germany, France and Spain .
“Ukraine is currently the fifth largest market for tourists to the Dominican Republic from Europe. Nowadays, around 15 thousand tourists are received, more than from Italy and Englandâ€, he stated.
Hebrard wonders what will happen to the Ukrainian tourists who are visiting the DR and what will be the mechanisms to proceed with their return?, according to N Digital.
In relation to oil, the economist said that the other problem for the Dominican economy derived from the Russia-Ukraine war, lies in the fact of the rise in the price of a barrel, which shot up to around 100 dollars in international markets.
In addition, he added that the other important aspect of the Dominican economy is that Ukraine is one of the main exporters of wheat, corn and soybeans, high-consumption products that will inevitably increase the prices of bread, chicken and other foods.
He stated that the only positive aspect from the point of view of the Dominican economy is that the price of gold has skyrocketed to almost two thousand dollars an ounce, although it would not compensate for the increase that would occur in cereals and oil.
"That is positive, but it will never be positive enough to offset the negative of grain and oil," he said.
We need to hope that this will end fast and without much more human suffering. The devaluation of currency here is all part of this. Everyone suffers, and for what reason?
The daily flight from Moscow to La Romana arrived late today and took 2 hours longer at 13 hours having diverted it's track northwards to pass north of Finland and Sweden and crossing the tip of Norway before flying here. See below track.
They obvously have to get the Russian vacationers back and perhaps there are some new holidaymakers with hard currency still coming here. I read Russians are finding they can't pay for online services using their bank cards today.
Unfortuately they are the ones who suffer for their leaders war with Ukraine.
The Domican Peso continues to increase against the US Dollar when that currency is inceasing against all other currencies today.
I doubt if this conflict will be over soon. I don't foresee Russia withdrawing it's troops nor Ukraine giving any ground that affects their independence and territory. The best we can hope for is a ceasefire now but that will be used to strengthen positions.
I suspect there will be subsidies in the shorter term in DR and already fuel is being subsidised with increases having being frozen for several weeks of recent and for the last 3 weeks too.
When repatriating Russian nationals , they use this excuse to flout the air rules
At this time Russian travel agencies seems to be cancelling many trips, including to DR.
But considering negotiations had started and not too many people realistically wants this war - hopefully it will stabilize at some point.
This must be a traumatic situation for these Ukranians....
Some 3,000 Ukrainian tourists are stranded in the Dominican Republic
At least 1,200 of those tourists do not have accommodation
Some 3,000 Ukrainian tourists are stranded in the Dominican Republic without the possibility of returning to their country as air connections have been canceled after the Russian invasion , Ukraine's honorary consul in the Caribbean country, Ilona Oleksandrivna, told Efe on Monday.
Some 1,200 of those tourists do not have accommodation, a figure that will increase as the days go by, when their hotel reservations run out, Oleksandrivna said.
Most of those 3,000 Ukrainian citizens are in the tourist hub of Bávaro and Punta Cana, in the east of the Dominican Republic.
The honorary consul, who asked for help for those compatriots who "have nowhere to live", is in Santo Domingo waiting to be received by members of the Dominican Government, to whom she will ask for help.
Two-thirds of the Ukrainians, about 2,000, arrived in the Caribbean country with packages from the Russian tour operator Anex Tour, which according to the consul has not provided help to travelers.
The Dominican authorities for the moment have not provided data on the number of Ukrainian citizens who are stranded in the country.
The Dominican Republic received at least 6,324 Ukrainian tourists in February, according to partial data from the Ministry of Tourism.
In January, 11,330 Ukrainian travelers were counted and in the calculation of last year there were 85,912 tourists from the European country.
Aeroflot flights to Punta Cana to cease in 2 days.....
Russian airline cancels flights with the Dominican Republic and other countries in the Americas until March 2
The Russian airline Aeroflot announced on Monday that, due to the closure of airspace with some countries in Europe and Canada, it has canceled its flights leaving from Russia to America.
In a press release, the airline indicated that the suspension of transatlantic flights will be until March 2.
The canceled flights were destined for Mexico City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Washington, Cuba, and Punta Cana.
No news from Azur Air who fly daily to DR on their flights but they may have no or very few aircraft to fly soon.......
Hundreds of Russia plane leases to be axed after Western sanctions
Feb 28 (Reuters) - Aircraft leasing firms are set to terminate hundreds of leases with Russian airlines following Western sanctions over the invasion of Ukraine that give the sector a month to act.
Dublin-based AerCap (AER.N), the world's biggest aircraft leasing company, saw its New York-listed shares tumble 12.7% after it said it would cease leasing activity with Russian carriers, while U.S.-based Air Lease (AL.N) fell almost 8%.
Russian airlines have 980 passenger jets in service, of which 777 are leased, according to analytics firm Cirium.
Of these, two-thirds, or 515 jets, with an estimated market value of about $10 billion, are rented from foreign firms.
AerCap said that by net book value, 5% of its fleet was leased in Russia as of Dec. 31. The company, which recently strengthened its leadership of the specialist aviation leasing industry by buying rival GECAS, has the largest exposure to Russia and Ukraine with 152 planes, consultancy IBA said.
Its Russian clients include Aeroflot, S7 Airlines, Rossiya, Azur Air and Ural Airlines, its website showed, involving aircraft worth an estimated $2.5 billion, according to aviation services firm ACC Aviation.
Leasing companies control about half of the world's fleet and are a vital source of financing for airlines that lack sufficient capital to buy or prefer to pay a monthly rent.
The European Union on Sunday gave leasing companies until March 28 to wind up current rental contracts in Russia, presenting lessors with a major new headache hard on the heels of crises over Boeing 737 MAX safety and the COVID-19 pandemic.
It appears you can no longer book flights to DR from Russia......
Russia closes flights to Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Venezuela
he airspace restrictions imposed by the European Union and other countries have forced operators and airlines to suspend the sale of trips to Mexico, the Caribbean and all of Latin America, as reported by the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR, by its Russian acronym).
According to a statement from the agency, in the reservation systems of tour operators, trips for all dates were no longer available, as of February 28, to Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Venezuela.
The closure of the airspace of European countries and Canada, as a consequence of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, became an "insurmountable obstacle for transatlantic flights of Russian airlines", even to open countries.
In fact, this Sunday Aeroflot registered the last two flights from Moscow / Cancun / Moscow, since as of February 28, although the flight is observed in the itinerary, it appears in zeros or is canceled ( Cancun: Aeroflot, Norwind and Azur concentrate the Russian flights)
According to the calculations of the analytical service of ATOR, in total abroad now there would be more than 150 thousand (Russian) tourists, and in those countries where there are now problems with the outflow of tourists to Russia (Europe, Caribbean countries , United States and others), more than 27 thousand.
The Russian air transport agency Rosaviatsia and the state tourism agency Rosturism reported that the authorities are working to organize the transport of Russians from European countries.
"The work to organize the return of Russian citizens from European countries is being carried out by Rosaviatsia together with the Russian Foreign Ministry and Rosturism," the document highlights.
And the process of getting the many stranded Russians abroad home begins......
A good story.....
Journalist living in Bonao offers accommodation to a Ukrainian tourist and her son
Alexander Galvez wants Ukraine to feel the support of the Dominican Republic
The journalist Alexander Galvez offered this Monday accommodation to one of the Ukrainian tourists who are stranded in the Dominican Republic after the crisis that his country is going through due to the war with Russia , which began five days ago.
Some 3,000 tourists have been stranded in the Dominican Republic , according to a report by the Efe news agency, which cited the honorary consul of Ukraine in the nation, Ilona Oleksandrivna, as a source.
According to the information, of that figure, 1,200 of those people do not have accommodation and the figure is expected to increase as tourists use up their time in the hotels they are in.
The Dominican Republic is one of the tourist destinations visited by Ukrainians.
The professional, who lives in Bonao, in the Monseñor Nouel province, explained that the foreigner he welcomes has to be a mother with her son or daughter.
He said his family made the decision to house those two people "as a show of solidarity and support" for Ukrainians, not just those stranded in the country. He added that the offer includes food, transportation and anything else that comes up while the conflict between the two nations is resolved.
“We made the decision to receive a mother with her son or daughter in our home to, in this way, make them feel that many Dominican families are sharing the pain and anguish that Ukraine is experiencing at this time due to the war with Russia †he told Diario Libre.
"We welcome them," he added, stressing that it doesn't matter how long these people have to stay in their home.
He pointed out that he has a daughter who is a doctor, who is also willing to help foreigners.
He said he can be reached at his number (1) 509-3469-1277. He explained that he works as a correspondent in Haiti, a country where he frequently travels.
If we were in our house, I'd probably be opening our guest rooms to those stranded. This is heartbreaking for everyone.
My sister-in-law is Russian, having defected from the USSR in the 80s, and she and my brother have two boys adopted from Ukraine and Belarus. The nephew from Belarus is a Marine and was in Ukraine last year and fell in love with the country and the people. For them, this is really stressful.
Unfortunately it might be better for them to be stuck in DR at this point then in Ukraine. The world can expect millions of refugees so DR might as well take some in. 40+ million Ukrainians...600k already left...millions more will flee.
Does anyone know who to contact in case you have the possibility to house a family? Is there any initiative taken by DR trying to house these families?
The honorary consul to the DR from Ukraine was meeting with gov't officials here. If I find out more info I will post it.
Just found this in Dominican Today
The Tony Fernández Foundation, which the former Dominican Major League player directed until his death, announced Monday that it will host several tens of the thousands of Ukrainian tourists stranded in the Dominican Republic due to the war between that country and Russia.
The tourists will be temporarily housed in the sports complex that the foundation administered in the province of El Seibo, the legal representative of that entity, AnÃbal Féliz, told Efe.
“We hope to welcome a first group of about 100 people, including children, who are part of the tourists from Ukraine who have completed their stay in the hotels in Punta and Bávaro (east) and have no money and cannot use their credit cards as a result. of the armed conflictâ€, affirmed the directive.
This war is turning into a humanitarian disaster for Ukranians and an economic disaster for Russians. All because of one illusionary dicatator.
I was just reading about how the average Russian is now feeling the effect of the sanctions imposed with the loss of a life savings through massive devaluation of the currency, impossibility to borrow because of massive interest hikes, impossibility to pay recurring debts on line due to denied access to credit systems such as Visa, Mastercard, Google Pay and Apple Pay and prohibitive costs to buy hard currency.
Ukraine invasion: Russians feel the pain of international sanctions
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-60558731
These economic effects will hit home hard here apart from the loss of tourists for those that have debts with Russians and that will include hotels and other tourist outlets and rental agencies are at risk.
I was just wondering if this could affect the Aman group and Amanera at Playa Grande and its employees because that hotel chain is Russian owned - but Doronin has denounced the invasion in the last day?
Ditto Sosua Ocean Village - perhaps they should denounce the invasion too?
Right, the Aman Group.....Russian owned..... what will be the affect on them.
Perhaps it's still domiciled in Asia
Aman Resorts has it's headquarters in Switzerland.
The owner, Vladislav Doronin, has as the Daily Mail article in above link, publically denounced the invasion and has plenty of reasons for doing so being involved in real estate on the USA too.
RD Tourism Cabinet meeting urgently due to suspension of flights from Russia
Minister David Collado reported today that the Tourism Cabinet will meet this afternoon to assess the situation of Russian and Ukrainian nationals stranded in the country.
"We are going to report today afternoon with the responsibility that characterizes us," said Minister Collado.
"What impact does the issue of the war between Russia and Ukraine have ," he referred to as the central axis of the emergency meeting of the Tourism Cabinet .
It should be noted that David Collado is currently meeting with other actors in the tourism sector in order to permanently analyze the situation.
It is estimated that currently around 15,000 tourists from Russia and 2,500 from Ukraine are stranded in the Dominican Republic.
Position of ASONAHORES
The executive vice president of the National Association of Hotels and Restaurants (ASONAHORES) , Andrés Marranzini , assured today that the tourism sector will be affected by the non-reception of visitors from Russia and Ukraine .
"We are not going to receive the tourists who usually come from those countries and are issuers who like the Dominican hotel product," he said.
"We will not be receiving them in the coming months and the impact will be to that extent,"Â Marranzini said .
Stranded Citizens
Given the situation that thousands of tourists stranded in the country are experiencing, Andrés Marranzini pointed out that they are looking for ways to solve the situation.
"Russian citizens at some point will be able to reach Russia and in the case of Ukrainians we are looking at the diplomatic route," he said.
"In associates of ASONAHORES we have given a waiting period to those who are in the facilities", Marranzini referred to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine .
"The first thing is human solidarity, we are a supportive people and I understand that businessmen will respond in this way," said the president of ASONAHORES .
letme know how we can help stranded people once a link or an org is located.
thanks
we are all human and regular citizens are not guilty of government issues.
God keep Ukranian citizens safe
I read post #26. If someone becomes aware of another way to help more of these stranded people, please post it. I dont think its safe to let strangers stay in your home in most cases, but there are always exceptions. Also, I wonder if we can pay lower cost hotels and restaurants to accept donations to allow these people to stay there. I am not talking 4 and 5 star hotels.
The govt has stated they are taking care of all stranded Ukranians. They have housing food and necessities. They are better off than most of their fellow countrymen.  I applaud the govt on this!
